Another Mosaic for you... the last November mosaic .... It is dark and raining, cold and windy... All those not so pleasant things about November happening at the same time on a Monday morning. So it is good to be cheered by the inspiration above! Thanks to all the artists and photographers for sharing their work, via my Flickr contacts.

This week: there will be no shop updates. As you may know I am not updating my shops until the New Year. I'm working on new designs and ideas for 2010. Expect to see it all coming together in January:) All I will say is 2010 is going to be a year focused on daily practice. Not just one medium. Words are going to be a prominent feature. Ok I am saying enough for now!

I have artwork available now in both my Etsy and bigcartel shops! Do take a look, thank you. I will endeavour to send your package out asap so that it arrives as speedily as possible.

Thanks to Morna for helping with my banners:)

This week I'll share with you here some past work and new ideas. I'll also be posting a new poem over at Nevering.

I would like to find time to make Christmas gifts and decorations this year. Not sure if I will find all the time I need. It is always busy here in the Nest of Threads:) But I will try.

This week's colour is: orange. A colour of energy and strength. It's a colour I've often avoided in my work, to be honest. But I am realising now how I am inspired by its warmth and spice. A colour for nesting in the dark days of Winter. I think it's about finding colours that work with the orange so that you don't feel it is too Autumnal. I like pink with orange:) I never thought I would type that but my colour palette is brightening and expanding.... maybe this recent painting in my November painted journal has helped me rethink colour....

Listening to: something completely different from the usual gentle stuff.... we've been listening to Alice in Chains new album Black Gives way to Blue. It is grungy rock at its finest. A superb album from this band after a long break.... Yes I have eclectic music taste.

Reading: Still slowly reading the latest Peter Ackroyd novel.... slowly due to time just flying by and so much going on lately....

Watching: I'm enjoying Miranda on BBC2. On tonight.

Have a very good week x

kimono friday

Here I am in my new (to me - a secondhand bargain) kimono..... did you know today is kimono friday? Well, I didn't either.....:) I like the colours and the wide sleeves. It is good to wear clothes our grandparents might have thought of as frivolous and not so practical. This is the kind of thing to wear when enjoying being at home.

I've been busy editing poems to put together into a collection (it's going to take some time). Also painting and designing when I can. Busy here and my boy's birthday tomorrow.

There's a lovely, lively selection of work in my shop. Some items now sold, thank you. Still time for your package to arrive before Christmas holidays.....

Enjoy your weekend x

november painted journal

I've been painting a book, a handmade journal, painting two pages - a spread - a day.... for this month of November..... Exploring colours and textures and ways of seeing and being.....

If I feel stuck or so lost in my own labyrinth of ideas, I turn to blank pages, I make the pages myself and I hope to unravel a little of myself and explore......

This book is about abstract painting and working intuitively. Some pages I like, others just don't work for me. It's not about making complete 'art'. This is about mark making and colours together, how they sing or sigh, or just want to be glued together!

The project is not over, of course, I have another several days..... Already I know from working this way that I will continue. I'm making a new journal. The new journal will be about the two things that I want to explore in the future, more than anything: painting and poetry.... These two together. So collage too and words, words that want to be written in paint, upon paint, underneath the pink, beyond the yellow.....

I've come to a crossroads in my work. I feel it. It's time to spend more time writing and exploring. The unknown ahead feels both golden and grey. But as much as I try to paint grey the colours keep coming through, so there's hope for me yet:)

I'll share more about my new journal and the pages and poems that come out of it, in the near future. Until then, I am pleased to share with you a new poem 'Golden', over at Nevering. With another image from my November journal. Also, I have enabled comments over at Nevering, as I am often emailed about my writing and people have kindly left comments here. It seems I should be opening up Nevering to the words of others.......

If you are celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow, I hope you have a special time.

Tomorrow I'll update you on how my November painted journal has been progressing. Until then, enjoy your Tuesday x

Another mosaic of favourites for your Monday.....

Many thanks to the artists and photographers for sharing their work via my Flickr contacts....

A very wet and dull start to the week here..... after a windswept, umbrella-inside-out walk to school, I am back in the warm with a coffee. The rain we have had in the southern part of the UK is nothing compared to other parts, and my thoughts are with the people in Cumbria and other regions who have been hit by floods.

I'm putting the finishing touches to things, ready for a big shop update later on this evening. My shop will be in maintenance mode today, mostly, whilst I do all the new window dressing. And then I'll launch around 9pm this evening (UK time). I'm sharing a mixture of stitched work and dolls - I hope you will enjoy taking a look. Preview photos of some of the work can be seen either on my Flickr or facebook pages.

This is my final update for 2009. The shop (and my etsy) will be open through December, for selling, and for showing sold work. In December I shall be busy with family, catching up with paperwork, designing new work for 2010. As my sister and I were saying recently - it feels only a few weeks ago that we were 'enjoying' the February snows and here we are only five weeks left of this year......

Many thanks to you for your comments, as always much appreciated. I've had some lovely mentions and features recently.

Check out tweemee

My stitched work is currently featured in a group exhibition 'Figuratively Speaking' at The Edge Gallery, Lancaster. Artists featured include myself, Michelle Holmes, Priscilla Jones and Alice Kettle. The show was recently reviewed here....
http://www.thetextiledirectory.com/newsarticle/Figuratively-Speaking:-A-Review

Currently listening to: I'm still really into Brett Anderson's 'Slow Attack' CD, so that gets played a lot. I have a long wish-list of CDs I wouldn't mind getting for Christmas (or just before ha...) Every time I watch Jools Holland's Later on BBC2 I add a few CDs to the list. Love that show.

Reading: one of my favourite writers, Peter Ackroyd... I'm reading his most recent novel 'The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein'.

This week's colour: I'm actually going to say it's stripes rather than a colour... my eye is often attracted to stripes at the moment. So expect to see them in my future work, perhaps.....I hope you have a very good start to the week x

Past Work

I was looking for something else (I found the natural dyes book, no I was looking for another book!) and came across an old black-paged journal from several years ago. I had started to make these tape-obsessed collages and here's one. Layers of torn collage, with soft pastels, and quite a lot of sticky tape. Little sequins in there too.

It's interesting to find old journals and ideas from the past. That is the good thing about hoarding old stuff - or should I say, selectively keeping a few choice books and folders of work (oh and a few boxes). I can remember working on this page, the excitement of trying something new and then going with it, the idea to cover the entire page as a way of keeping that dusty pastels on the collage.

It's at times like these, when life gets busy and I feel the need for a change of pace, and time to reflect, times like these it is good to be reminded of all the ideas I've had and how these ideas lead to other ideas and..... So it is that I am looking forward to some time during December to really recharge my creative batteries and start a new journal for the month.

But as for now - I have some lovely things to share with you next Monday! I hope you will enjoy taking a look in my shop. I'm keeping much of it a secret until then.

Thank you for all your comments, your words are much appreciated. It's good to be in touch and to know you enjoy reading.
Have a very good weekend x

Natural dye studio - walnut & madder

I'm continuing to experiment with dyes on linen. I love the feel of this ancient fabric, the way it alters as you wash and wash it. I'd love to make more for the home: towels, pillows, cushions etc.... and have so many ideas and one day will get to them all..... In the meantime....

A little on dyeing with walnut. The dyestuff used for a walnut dye is usually the husks, either fresh or dried. But also the leaves and bark of the tree can be used and will yield some sort of colour. For my recent dye pots, I have used dried husks from my trusted supplier. The best, darker shades are obtained by using fresh, so I have read, but have never attempted.

I use the traditional saucepan and heat method for dyeing with walnut, simmering the bits of husk in water and then adding fabric, and simmering more. No mordant is needed as walnut is high in tannin content. However, if you use alum a slightly different shade can be obtained as I proved to myself recently.

I dyed mordanted and untreated linen. I put safety pins in the mordanted fabrics, so I could tell them apart. The paler fabric is the unmordanted piece. I'm pleased to see this difference. It proves that my mordanting is effective. (I used a mordanting overnight in a jar method - see previous dye posts). I've now got one piece of linen in a jar, soaking in walnut solution - I'll wait a week and check results.

As I type this, more linen and wool fibres are soaking in a large pot of walnut dye solution. The walnut dye is a lovely deep dark brown shade, but the results will vary from warm creams, fawns and peaty brown shades. The wool is definitely darker brown. I will spin and knit it, perhaps a scarf.....

I've also been dyeing linen with madder. Linen likes to turn pink. I've got some lovely pale pink shades. You can see that on the doll below (her skirt). I've also dyed deeper shades on linen and then overdyed with black tea to create a cinnamon tone. I made this simple bag using the cinnamon fabric. The bag is lined with a creamy-yellow, basil dyed cotton. I'll be using the bag for this and that. It's a good shape for knitting needles or paint brushes, or sticks.

The walnut dyed linen has become a doll...... dressed in vintage fabric with pink madder linen.... She will be in my shop next Monday, along with several others.......

I enjoy putting together natural dyed fabrics with vintage. They seem to work well and the feel of washed linen with carefully used fabric is a nice one, a gentle feel. I've enjoyed all the dye work that I've done in recent months. It's good to always have a new batch on the go. Infact I enjoy the dye and experimenting more than I ever used to, perhaps I feel more confident and able to try different ideas, knowing there will always be something I can do with the results? And I just enjoy the playing with natural colours. In the new year I shall be offering 'sample bags' of dyed fabric and wool in my shop. I'd love to see what you can make with these lovely fabrics.

sky & tomorrow

Another sky photo..... I like photographing the clouds and the clear skies, as well as grey days.... And today has been a mild one, with plenty of sunshine. It's also been a busy day for me with family appointments and so I am postponing my dye studio post until tomorrow. I hope then I'll have an interesting few things to share about my newest natural plant dye experiments. More soon x

Early Monday here and I am sitting with my cup of tea, attempting to post this mosaic before the rush of the school week begins:) A big thank you, as always, to all the artists and photographers featured here.

It's still dark here, but I am thinking in colour. Working on new dyes and paints. I hope to post a 'dye studio Tuesday' tomorrow.

Good news / bad news now. I just want to say how sorry I am to not now be participating in the We Make London show coming up. This is for personal family reasons - I think a right decision. I wish everyone participating a successful day.

Good news is I am still working away on new projects, as time allows, and I shall be updating my shop at least once, if not twice, before the Winter holidays and a quieter time. So my next update for my own shop will be next Monday 23rd November. I'll be offering a variety of stitched work and I hope you will take a look.

A busy week ahead for me. I'm very much hoping it will stop raining for a while, but that is a minor detail really.....

This week's colour: green. Green is such a hopeful colour and one that we reach toward perhaps, as the days grow shorter and we look ahead....

Listening to: We've been playing Peter Broderick's 'Float' CD quite a lot recently. If you don't know Broderick's music then do a search on your favourite online listening gizmo, Lovely melodic.

Reading: dipping into lots of different things. I've mislaid my favourite natural dyes book so if anyone can tell me with their psychic radar where I may have left it then let me know! we do have a few books in this house:)

I hope you have a very good week - more soon x

A linen snowgal, wearing natural dyed fabrics....

Just a brief hello..... my apologies for being quiet over the past few days. It's a stormy ol' weekend here. We stood by the window last night and watched helplessly as our little plastic greenhouse lifted off the ground, levitated over the lawn and dumped itself on the other side of the garden! Apart from that, no serious damage. Having a quiet weekend with the family. I'll be updating my etsy shop with a few new paintings tomorrow evening x

a hint of gold

Just a hint of gold, or so...... When I'm outside walking, I note the last yellow-gold leaves as they cling on or swirl about between the trees..... I liked the idea of stitching a dreamer wearing a crown, because these imagined figures are so lost in their own little imaginations, and a crown, why not, be ruler of your own dreams....?

These two stitched works will be in my shop later on today. A small update this week. I'm busy working on lots of new, as I have the upcoming London show. Time is going by so quickly....

A new poem & photo at nevering....

Toward Winter

These past few days it does feel like we are moving toward Winter. Misty days and nights. A dampness and chill. The heating buzzes on and off. Thank goodness for daylight eco bulbs - and hot chocolate....

And so I'm working on new Winter offerings. Dolls with a Wintry touch, snowglobes of course, paintings, drawings.....

The pictures above show a snowgirl, of her own kind..... She wears a madder-dyed skirt and has a gently aged linen body. I'm making a sisterhood of similar dolls..... I enjoy my dolls primitive. Something about linen that I enjoy, despite it being fiddly to turn tiny arms..... Linen is an old fabric. And I want my dolls to have a certain timeless feel... true, wool bodies also give this. But I like working with and dyeing linen. I'm at the moment dyeing some linen to make it a certain ginger shade....

A new journal project, for November, is my November painted book. Inspired by the NaNoJouMo http://www.flickr.com/groups/1249699@N20/group over at Flickr.

I'm painting pages each day. That's two pages of mixed media abstract painting. I've decided to make this an abstract project, It's an opportunity to flex my abstract brushstrokes and see what ideas come through. I'm working on handmade book pages, painting in simple signatures and at the end of the month I'll make the book into a whole. You can follow my daily progress by looking at this set on my Flickr pages.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/novembermoon/sets/72157622731234836/

My favourite pages, so far, early days..... I'm thinking how it might be to make this a year's project, not just a month.... but that is rather ambitious and will see how this month works out for me and my brushstrokes....

Good Monday to you! Many thanks to the artists and photographers featured here for sharing their work via my Flickr contacts...... A misty, chilly start to the week. The mist is lingering and the sun has given up trying to burn through.... my son said this morning today is the first day of Winter. Well, maybe it felt like it.....

This week I am busy working on many stitches, new dolls too. A painting project that I will tell you more about tomorrow. Drawings, paintings..... something and everything. I have the We Make London show to not so far ahead. So I want to have a good selection of work for the day.

I shall be updating my own shop with a small selection of items this Wednesday 11th.

Yesterday I updated my etsy shop with a few new works, and a few have sold already, thank you x

This week's colour is: gold... Inspired by the new December gold-themed issue of World of Interiors magazine, which is eye candy and inspiring indeed..... I have just bought some gold thread. We shall see....

Listening to: Unthanks CD that came out in September 'Here's the tender coming' - beautiful English folk voices. I loved their first album and this one is also very good. I don't listen to many songs with lyrics when I work, as I find they distract me. I tend to listen to quite minimalist classical music and so on. Music without words but a steady pulse to keep me moving along. But when not working I like to listen to songs. Often that's stood by the kitchen sink washing up.

Reading: still reading the Winterson 'Stone Gods' - as per last week. It's been a busy week and I don't read too much at night before falling asleep....

Have a very good week. And thank you, a big thank you for all your birthday wishes.

More soon....x

40

Thank you for all your comments and birthday wishes this week x I had a quiet birthday with my nearest.... we went for lunch and then came home with cakes.... Had some nice cards and pressies....

I'm wearing a lovely birthday scarf knitted for me by my friend Carolyn aka Love Stitching Red
It was a slightly windswept but sunny day. I can't remember the last time the sun shone on my birthday.... So last night, after a fine day, a fine evening and fireworks all around. As we live on a bit of a hill, we got a good view of several displays.

I'm never that keen on pictures of myself, you know how it is. But I thought I would have a few snapshots so I know how it was.... and no it is not downhill from here! Thank you to everyone who has said how positive moving into your forties can be. My thirties were such a rollercoaster ride, at times; I'm feeling more myself these days. Which is not always easy, as I know I have my strengths and faults like the next person..... But mostly it's ok being me.

Enjoy your Sunday. (I'll be updating my etsy shop with a few new paintings and monoprint collages...... this evening.)

And the winners.....

And the winners are........ as 'pulled' randomly from our papier mache bowl....

The Gritty Bird
Puk
Tara

A winner in the USA, one in outside UK Europe, and one in UK. Sometimes random works out rather nicely.

Thank you to everyone who wished to win, much appreciated! It was intriguing to see your choices for a custom painting. I shall be creating three custom paintings some time quite soon.

This weekend, tomorrow infact it is my 40th birthday..... so I shall be eating cakes and there may be fireworks:) I'll share a bit about it next week...

Nina asked yesterday to explain a little more about Bonfire Night. Well, it is celebrated each year, November 5th and is associated with Guy Fawkes and his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament, many years ago, and yes he died a horrible death... and yes no-one really thinks too much about the meaning of it all these days, but because of the gunpowder connection we now have fireworks and a bonfire. It used to be, I remember as a tiny girl, people would build a Guy using old clothes stuffed with newspaper - a bit like a scarecrow. And kids would take their guy around in a wheelbarrow and beg 'penny for the guy'.... but begging like that is now frowned upon and I can't remember the last time I saw it. The Guy is burned on the bonfire. People don't do that so much these days either. Maybe because to be honest it's not so entertaining. As a child, we used to have fireworks on my birthday. Catherine wheels of course. Spinning fireworks that get nailed to the garden fence. So, this rather long-winded explanation has probably left you none the wiser!

I've enjoyed this week of poetry birds - the process of making new birds and seeing them come to life..... New work has been added to my shop and sold. Thank you! There are some items still available, so do take a look if you fancy. Next week they'll be just one update, on Wednesday. A few new items. Meanwhile, I'll be adding a few new paintings to my etsy shop this coming Sunday.

Also next week I'll tell you about my November painted book project.

Thank you kindly, and enjoy your weekend x

November sky

Hello, a little late in the day for me...... a new poetry bird with linen dyed using blackberries.... and a new snowglobe (both now sold, thank you). The blackberry-dyed linen had a mottled effect that reminds me of November skies....

Today I've been snapping photos of the sky.....November skies always changing..... the sun fleeting and then hidden in cloud.... The moon low and brooding.... And of course we have fireworks here in the UK, as it is bonfire night, but this evening was quiet-ish around here. Most people are keeping their fireworks for the weekend perhaps.....

tomorrow I shall be putting names in a hat and pulling out three winners for my painting giveaway...

good night x

bird & brooch

Continuing my 'week of poetry birds', today I'm offering a darker bird, hand dyed charcoal black linen this one.... This bird and the brooch will be in my shop later today..... I could make up a little story about how the girl dreamer had a bird in her silver cage, in her little red world, but one day it escaped and grew and..... oh..... how the bird did sing..... or something like that....

More tomorrow and thanks always for your comments. Remember, you have until Friday evening (UK time) to sign up for my painting giveaway (scroll down a bit for the post last Friday I think it was), and thanks to all who have signed already, thank you! x

out of time yet still we dream

'Out of time, yet still we dream' a new, larger stitched artwork..... my machine has got back into her stride now, and I enjoyed stitching all those tiny dark blue-green faces.... Combining elements and ideas that I've been playing with over the past several months, faces in dresses, puppet dreamers, writing, dense stitch with swirling pale background......

This artwork will be in my shop shortly..... along with a new poetry bird . And I'll be adding new work through the week..... Please note: I am continuing to offer free insured shipping for larger artworks in my shop. For smaller items, I am charging a small charge for postage. Thank you.

First mosaic of November... and a bright, mild November Monday, after a stormy weekend.... Many thanks to all the artists and photographers for sharing their work, via my Flickr contacts.

This week is my Week of Poetry Birds..... I hope to share a small flock of stitched bird ornaments in my own shop, over the week.... I'll also be adding to the shop a variety of other stitched artwork, including brooches.... So please do take a look.

Also, this week I shall continue to work on new tiny paintings, you can see paintings available here.

This week's colour is red.... I've not had red in mind for a while, I never go 'off' it as such, but I've used it only with hints here and there, for a while.... now I feel red is coming back.....

Listening to: Brett Anderson's new release 'Slow Attack'..... an excellent, thoughtful, impressive new CD out today, I've been hearing preview tracks and loving each one....

Reading: Jeanette Winterson's The Stone Gods - for whatever reason I don't know, I did not read this book when first published. Winterson is one of my very favourite writers. I'm enjoying this novel.

Hoping this sunshine will last a few more days at least, it just makes taking photographs of finished work so much easier. Of course, too much sun makes its own problems... ah well....

Have a very good week x

memory - a tiny 'card painting' now available here.....

thanks to all for signing up for my painting giveaway, you have until next Friday....

new poem notes at nevering: 'November'

I've been writing new bird poems and poem-y fragments, for my week of poetry birds starting tomorrow. One or two birds will fly hopefully into my shop, each day....

and a Happy November to you..... more soon x
