painterly

a framed abstract painting I made last year.... what I look at to one side when I am sat at my sewing machine..... (I have said this before, but, my alter ego is an abstract painter....)

another kind of painting..... natural dyes on cotton fabrics..... logwood and logwood with onion in subtle results - these are nearly all results from using dyejars for a second time..... these colours are similar to those in a poetry heart I have just finished making.

Both beautiful; I love the subtelties of colour in the dyed cloth. How lightfast/washproof are the natural dyes -I guess being able to wash it isn't a priority though? Do you have a way of fixing the dye? Really love your work, I look forward to seeing what you do with the cloth :)

Thank you Stephie and Jo for your comments...

I use an alum mordant to help 'fix' the colour and the fabrics are all washed thoroughly after dyeing. I've left these for a while to see what if any fade may occur and there has been none visible (for a few months).... over time logwood will very very gently fade but kept away from direct sunlight these should stay much as they are.... I am hoping to make a small hand stitch project, perhaps a patchwork collage piece.....

No alter-ego at all, I think you wear both hats, occupy both roles. When I feel like I "do too much" or am too all over the map, rather than just focusing on one, say medium, then I think of artists like Kiki Smith or Louise Bourgeois.

Lovely gentle colours and the threads on top of the frame complete the picture.
