won't you sit with me a while....

A dark-haired doll..... (when I showed her to my son he said: she looks like you!)..... hand dyed linen and a mix of hand dyed and vintage fabrics... She likes the chair, and feels it gives her a certain authority... all those words......

chairs - papier mache chairs, finally completed...... I have been working on these, on and off, for several weeks now...

and a pointy hat chap testing out a chair.... he's hoping for a few friends to arrive, some time soon...

I'm so pleased the sun came out - I was hoping it would so that I could take these photos....

enjoy your weekend....x

new yesterdays

four new yesterdays (and a pencil sketch on the wall.... I've been considering her for a while, what she wants to do.... I think she might become an image in a forthcoming zine but more on that in the future...) These dolls will be in my shop update next Tuesday.

A little earlier today I posted a new poem 'Attempting to photograph snowdrops' over at Nevering.

I hope you have a good weekend.... we're having a strange mix of weather here: sun, hail and snowflakes.... take care and more soon....

breathing space

Breathing space - a patchwork collage, hand stitched, using my own hand dyed fabrics...... cotton fabric dyed with onion skins, madder, blackberries, logwood, feverfew and walnut.

This is the first in what may become a series of small hand stitched fabric works that I call my 'breathing space' pieces...... As you may know, my work is very much about word and figurative image, the combining of, the meanings and ways into dreams..... my mind is a constantly chattering, dreaming mind, just like yours perhaps.... I work in energetic hours and then there are quiet times, but mostly when I get into it, I'm busy and there is an electric buzz to everything, (not just my sewing machine)...

So it's interesting to work on something that is quiet, that slows me down and gets me sitting quietly and with a simple purpose - to let go of word and figure, and to make an abstract poem in simple stitches..... There's no time constraints to working this way, I just work when I have a moment and the space to breath a little.... I can let my mind wander away from the my usual dreaming paths....

Whilst stitching this first 'breathing space' I found my mind wandering over Dartmoor and to the edge of some mythical water, and then along the Thames and looking across to St. Paul's.... all this wandering in just a few thousand stitches..... I thought about poems but I did not consider the words....

This is the first breathing space, then.... and I'll start on another some time soon.... Working on a small scale, these are smaller 'slow cloths', if you like....

I do like and embrace the ideas of the slow cloth movement that is taking shape right now, I think it is excellent.... I thank Jude and others for their inspiration and mindfulness.... There is a new flickr group for slow cloth photos here.

many thanks to you for all the comments - I'm pleased you are enjoying the new artist books, I'm enjoying working on these too...

I shall be here for the dreaming

I shall be here for the dreaming

another artist book - but this one is quite tiny, at just 5cm tall...... tiny does not mean less detailed, not for me. If you know my work you know I often like to work on a small scale.... (I like having the complete object in my palm).

this book combines machine embroidery with very small monoprint drawings, some of the drawings on paper from a book. I like using the yellowed paper.

Now I'm tired and ready for bed, so will go and do some deep sleep dreaming.... This time of year my dreams are very complex and long..... last night I had a strange dream about being back at my first university and seeing people eating with flower shaped spoons......

more tomorrow x

Suddenly finding a poem

Suddenly finding a poem

artist book, mixed media collage, three folding pages - this one is slightly taller than other recent works, at 12cm tall..... a coming together of machine embroidery, monoprint drawing and handwriting, hand dyed fabrics and found papers & text..... my starting point for this book was the central three head embroidery piece - you may have seen that in a previous 'work in progress' post.... I made connections with other drawings and stitch...

The work I am sharing here this week is the coming together of work that I have been slowly creating over the past several weeks. Thanks for your kind comments x

Bunny we shall be close

Bunny we shall be close

mixed media collage 21 x 26cm on mount board..... collage combines hand dyed fabrics, with painted papers, handwriting, an original vintage photograph, monoprint drawing, text from old books, hand and machine stitch.....

Natural dye studio - inky

As promised, a post sharing ideas on how natural dyes can be used on paper..... I've experimented over the past several months, dipping into dye solutions and testing them out. Also, I've looked about for ink recipes. You will need to make quite concentrated dye solutions. This can be done by putting the dry dye stuff in a saucepan and simmering. An alternative method that I like to use is to put the dry dye stuff in a jar, cover with boiled water and then put the jar in a warm cupboard or on a sunny windowsill and leave for several days. This latter method is the slow way but means I'm not using the stove or washing pans. To make a concentrated dye solution for painting or ink, just add a small amount of water to quite a lot more dye stuff.... it seems quite straight forward, but experimenting is the way....

Dark and warm sepia is my favourite shade of dipping pen ink. To make this I combine walnut, logwood and madder together. To help the ink flow and add a subtle gloss to the dry ink, a few drops of gum arabic can be added. (Beware: gum arabic is a sticky solution, so be sure to clean the bottle rim before replacing the lid, else when you go to use it next time you might not be able to open the bottle and you may have a sore hand, yes I still have a sore hand....)

scribbling with a dipping pen..... you can put the ink in a fountain pen, but I prefer a dipping pen. I like to also add essential oils to the ink. The scent may not last very long on paper that is exposed to air and sun, but should scent a notebook and makes for pleasurable writing. I enjoy lavender, mandarin, cinnamon and so on..... (If you are pregnant or allergic to certain essential oils take caution and seek advice, of course).

Used as colour washes, dye solutions can make interesting watercolours, with subtle results. Here I have combined brush strokes of logwood and walnut dye....

If you wish to know more about inks, of course there is a lot more to know. I'm just sharing here my personal experience. This has reminded me to use the inks more in my writing. I've noted today the inks I made several months ago are still lively and good to use, as I stored them carefully in dark blue bottles. If you don't have dark glass storage, you can improvise with black paper labels and storing away in a cool cupboard. I think I need to buy some more dark blue bottles when I next visit Neals Yard Remedies, that is where I get mine.

I've seen some beautiful natural inks sold commercially. These often use tannic acid from oak galls and indigo.

If you want to try natural colour painting with children, I suggest raiding the spice cupboard - as anyone who cooks curry will tell you, turmeric is a good and lasting colour that stains just about everything! Try turmeric, cinnamon, coffee, tea, herbal teas and so on....

I hope this gives anyone interested a few ideas and 'ways-in' to working with natural dyes on paper.....

Another Monday, a new mosaic..... many thanks to the artists and makers for sharing their work via my Flickr contacts....

Last of the January Mondays, a milder day, with a damp air.....

I always say that I have a busy week ahead - it's true. I do. If you could see my so-called 'studio', with so many different elements of this and that placed 'where I might find them again' - I know it looks a little like someone has got into my dreams and started to unpick and collage bits together... hmmm but isn't that what I am trying to do in my work anyway? perhaps, yes perhaps....

I shall get on with it now. Plenty to do, lots in progress....

I'll be showing work in progress and completed work quite a bit this week, hopefully....

And a note to say if you see anything previewed here this week that you may be interested in knowing more about, you are welcome to email me and I can let you know price etc..... c cullis at gmail dot com

tomorrow I shall be putting together a natural dyes post - an inky one -

thanks to everyone who has voted for me in the Poppies - still time I think.... (see link up there top left)

take care and enjoy your weekx

foxy & yellow

During the cold snowy days of just a short while ago, the strange January snows that got us out of step a bit and snowed in a bit too, I experimented with ice and linen... this strip of mordanted linen was placed in a bucket of water with an old rusted metal latch. The water froze and every day as I went outside to feed the birds, I looked to see the fabric captured in the ice, swirled like a frozen fish..... When the thaw came, I almost forgot this small experiment, but then I remembered and after washing and drying this is the result - something a bit foxy. A few days ago I saw this lovely photo of a fox in a newspaper and made a connection.... pinned up for inspiration right now, I think the fabric might become something in a stitched collage....

Today is one of those dull, milder days of January.... I'm more accustomed to this kind of Winter weather. To cheer things up, I felt like working with bright yellow, so I've just finished stitching this yesterdays doll.... my yesterdays dolls are all hand stitched as they are rather fine and dainty. She wears turmeric yellow and a viola blue band on her skirt.

As you've probably gathered, I'm stitching and working on new things for my shop. I've had a few people ask me if there will be new yesterdays dolls and yes including the doll above. I hope to make a good selection for you to see. Also, as suggested a while ago (last year) in a natural dyes post, I shall be offering some of my own rather special dyed fabrics, individual fabric strips that could become something in your own hands, with your own stitches....

And also I shall be offering: new artist books, mixed media collage work, a few papier mache chairs and anything else that time allows.....

Chatters asked as a comment on yesterdays post: can natural dyes be used on paper? - and this is indeed a good question. I have experimented with natural dyes to make inks and to use as colour washes. I found out that dye liquid can make very subtle colour washes, adding gentle tones to different papers. I like natural dye inks for writing and drawing, and this has reminded me that I never did share my inky results from a while ago, so I shall try to do that next week when I have more time to take photos etc... To make natural colour inks, try concentrated dye of madder and logwood, and of course walnut. Experiment with the colours mixed with gum arabic and a few drops of an essential oil such as lavender... rather interesting.... I'll write more next week....

enjoy your weekend x

new work

melancholia - arcane magic - a three page mixed media artist book
the book features stitched rabbit figures, my own hand dyed fabrics, monoprint drawings and handwriting, with text from old books...

Something about dreaming in the Winter time
a mixed media collage.... quite larger, for me, having worked on smaller pieces for a while. This collage is presented on board measuring 30 x 40 cm.

You may see up there at top left a link to the poppytalk blog site..... it seems I've been nominated for an award, in the 'crafter' section of 'the poppies'..... I'm very flattered indeed (though I don't think of myself as a 'crafter', though I suppose I am, I don't know, I don't have a problem with it, I'm shrugging and saying ok then!)..... there are many people I know, some lovely friends indeed, who have also been nominated for this so.... this is good and I hope new people find new people, and we are all the happier, for in this world of visual ideas new connections bring about all kinds of creative opportunities and rewards:)

Pretty sure I won't win but it's fun to be nominated so thank you. Ok vote for me anyway, please:)

A foggy start to the week..... but the snow has just about melted and it feels a good deal less icy..... Many thanks to the artists and photographers featured here, for sharing their images via my Flickr contacts...

A busy week ahead for me. I'm working on a variety of stitch, line, and word, toward new artist books.... I think I will spend a good part of this week working on the book materials.... I hope to share more work in progress with you.

Scribbling in notebooks, one idea leads to the next.

a slight alteration to the way ahead.....

I'm making a few changes to plans, a slight alteration to the way ahead..... After a few weeks of it, I have felt it's not been working out. A process-led project should be that. My daily drawings project is changed. I am working quietly in a journal and not offering the work for sale....

I have only so many hours each day to work and want the actually making to be as thoughtful and meaningful as it may be.

My creative working time is often limited, I know yours may be too. So, I am happy now to be working on my daily drawings privately and will see where they take me....

I thank everyone for taking a look at my drawings for sale. Please know I will be including monoprint and stitched drawings in my own shop, in future updates.....

I may make a zine booklet featuring my drawings. And that will be a way of helping to pay for the paper and pencils. I will think about that idea without it imposing too much on.... the process....

As for ongoing works....

I have plenty of small things gathering, work in progress. I like this slow collecting of small things made. I like to hold in my hand and consider, thinking and waiting for a next stage.

Also, I am working on some new pointy hat chaps. I have not made any for a while. I find they cheer me and working with colour is a tonic, one needed with the fog and snow still lingering outside.... I shall get to work on their stripey hats quite soon......

Thank you for all your comments, always appreciated.

Have a peaceful, colourful, quietly creative weekend x

experimental stitches

experimental stitched pieces.... here you see the 'other side' or 'bobbin side' of the work..... I've felt for a while that I want my stitching work to not always be exact and dense, and just so.... So I am aiming toward using some of that improvisation and abstraction that I use in monoprint drawings.... I think these pieces may find their way into future artist books. I am working on several new concertina handmade books and thank everyone for their positive comments regarding these.... I'm working on many many smaller 'elements', drawings, stitches, writing and then will have several days of book creation.... That sounds like a plan:)

Meanwhile, I have just posted a new poem 'Her Dreams of Flying' over at Nevering.
And I'm just about to put a new tiny drawing into my daily drawings etsy shop.....

Never a dull moment.... except looking out the window I see the fog is taking over and I may need a pair of scissors, a torch and a ball of red wool to get up the hill and back again when I go and collect my son from school in a little while.......

I hope you are well x

Good Monday to you, and thanks for the artists and photographers featured here for sharing their work, via my Flickr contacts.....

I'm sat here in the warm listening to the drip-drip of water as icicles melt.... and birds call in the very slightly warmer morning.... It is still very snowy out there and we had a further small flurry last night. One child back at school today, one due back tomorrow, and chance of a thaw by the end of the week?

It's the 11th day of the new year already, but something I wanted to do and have yet to do is write a few predictions and dreams for the year ahead..... So here goes....

I'd really like to see lots of new work and new ideas flourishing in 2010.... a diversity of ideas out there, in the world of art and crafts.. An attention to detail and a thoughtfulness. Things not rushed, but considered, slow stitches and yes lightning improvisations... but all from the heart, original, personal dreaming.... Work that moves beyond the trends of today. Making of things and samples to experiment with an idea, and not just to make an end product. Follow your dreams and enjoy the process..... be yourself. I am writing this as a reminder to myself too..... be true to your own words, marks, lines, stitches, dreams, colours and songs....

I'm sometimes filled with doubt and hopelessness. I worry like mostly everyone about paying the bills, asking the right price for my work, making work that matters.... I am not always confident. I am not a fragile ice-petal. I am not a fool, all the time. My work is inspired by so many ideas and artists and dreams, but I try to make it my own. I ask that my work is respected. I am thin-skinned. I take things very personally..... this is all about being me and my work is mostly about it too. But I hope that you can see beyond the personal and relate to what I wish to share.... I hope this year I can work through some of my personal anxiety and let the happiness in, more and more.... See beyond the 'I' and share some special work....

Musings over for now! This week I am working on many new projects..... Books, stitches, the chairs are feeling neglected and need new layers, drawing daily, writing poem notes, perhaps a few new dye jars need to be started... but we shall see:)

Enjoy your week x

recent work

my daily drawings continue.... today's is a delicate pencil sketch..... each day I sit down to draw with very little planned.... so far that is how it is... ten days in and early days of course....

Meanwhile, I'm also working on new poetry notes.... I'm rejecting anything that begins with 'snow' just because I am slightly sick of the stuff.... and a small lament on icicles has also got the pencil crosses.... now I type that I wonder if: 'a small lament on icicles has pencil crosses' is not a good way into something, so I'll make myself another cup of tea (there will be a tea shortage soon I am sure!) and scribble new notes into my journal....

'If yellow is today....' a mixed media collage - in my own shop.

enjoy your Sunday x

Friday, 8 January 2010

and so it continues....

'Our curious friend'.... one of two daily drawings that I have created today - now in my etsy shop....

And so the big freeze continues, the UK is covered with ice and snow.... Our road is a steep hill and snowed up, though neighbours have been out there clearing the snow and putting down the little grit we have.... I'm very pleased to say that I live within walking distance of both a post box and a small supermarket. All recent purchases from my shops have been posted, many thanks! We've stocked up with essentials and prepared for more snow this weekend!

I've been concerned about the birds surviving such a bitter chill... so have been putting out a range of foods (I'm now out of bird seed). Grated cheese, sultanas (thanks for the tip Carolyn!), also breakfast cereals and cooked rice are worth offering, so I'll do that. We've seen various blackbirds, tits, wagtails, doves, starlings, magpies and wrens....

female blackbird and a wagtail in motion...
Meanwhile, I've been busy working on new drawings and new designs for my shop..... this weekend I hope to continue work on some hand stitch projects and plan on watching several old black and white movies, whilst eating the last of the Christmas chocolate.....:)

Have a very good weekend.

new artist books & shop update

I've been so very busy..... despite the snowy weather (we have a lot of snow out there right now!).... Making books has fascinated me, many years and many styles.....ever since I was at primary school and my friends and I made our very own photocopied comic, complete with crosswords.....

These artist books, concertina folding style, are a way for me to showcase my ideas, the obsessions that make my work, my work...... I combine stitch with monoprint drawing, paper from old novels, snippets of fabric etc....

Both these books are in my shop update today. I shall be launching quite soon.

I'm planning to create several other books, in the future. But for now I begin this year with the two here. I'm also including in my shop today several other mixed media pieces and six yesterdays dolls. I had suggested chairs might feature but they are time consuming and I want to take my time to make a few more. So they shall be in next month's update.

As we have a lot of snow, there may be a slight delay in packages arrival. I can walk to the post box on a main road, a short way from here, no problem. So long as the main roads stay connected, which they are, there should not be a problem.

I hope your week is going well, more soon x

to patch or pleat - working with dyed fabrics

I enjoyed working on some hand stitched patchwork over the holidays. I made log cabin inspired patches of 'random enough' natural colours. I also made this small patchwork piece, using cotton dyed with blackberries.... I made the patchwork into a lavender pillow....

My experiments with natural plant dyes nearly always involve strips of fabric, and so I dyed a strip of cotton using logwood and onion skins, and sat down with the idea of cutting the strip and piecing it back together, patchwork......

But then as I held my scissors I realised I didn't want to do more patchwork. I enjoyed the holidays project but it's not my first love.... stitch and manipulation then, I decided, that's more me:) So, I am slowly folding and sewing to make the strip of fabric into a different strip of fabric, a new cloth with a new texture and weight. I'm often adding these little tuck-pleats to dolls clothing, skirts and so on... I like the feel of them very much.

So that's one of the projects I am working on. I think I'll make several manipulated strips and see how they hang together. What if I stitch them together or just place them side by side, or attempt to make some kind of garment..... not sure. The part of my thread-brain that says: you must make 'a something' wants to know where all this pleating is going to, but for now I say calm and stitch anyway....

Meanwhile I am working on my daily drawings, and another new project: 'mind maps'. But more about them later in the week. For now I must get on with finishing some work for a shop update tomorrow.

Icy icy cold out there, this January morning.... it's not always like this at the start of the year, I remember mild Januarys.... A good Monday to you and thanks to all the artists and photographers featured here in my first mosaic of the year. Fewer images this week as I have spent less time looking at Flickr - there is no lack of inspiration there, believe me, just had less time on the computer.....

This week, like many around the world, I am getting back into the routine after holidays.... routine can be a dull word but only if you let it, so I'll say it with gladness and hope.... I'm grateful to have my things to do, and glad to be starting on my year of daily drawings. The drawings - may they be pencil, monoprinted ink, stitched - are added to my Etsy shop as part of the daily process.... I don't have a set time for adding work, it will be there some time each day. I'll post a quick twitter when it's done - my twitter is novembermoon.

Novembermoon... remember I had a blog/site of that name? I had plans to make it into a gallery/archive, but time has gone by....... I have had that email saying you have x number of days until the domain needs renewal and I am not sure if I will renew. I may just let it go. I don't need novembermoon.com to be novembermoon..... I started using my own name on things rather than novembermoon. It was a shift that felt right. But I am both and so....

This week I am completing work for my own shop update - Wednesday 6th. My plan is to update that shop on a monthly basis, adding to it a variety of work. This month I will be offering yesterdays dolls, stitched & mixed media work. Perhaps a few chairs:)

Ah the sun is coming out...... the frosted sprinkling of snow looks pretty in the light. Must order more bird food from RSPB. Better get on with my day's work...... have a very good week x

for a while...

For a while she felt her mind centred - a mixed media drawing in stitch and today's daily drawing.... (available)
. it's already getting dark here. We've had a dusting of sugary snow that has remained all day. I've watched many different birds come to our garden as they know food can be found. Today I packed away our tree, as I usually do on the second day of a new year. I enjoy putting it away now, looking ahead, and replacing decorations with a few different objects and artworks...
I hope you enjoy your Saturday...

Happy New Year 2010

A group of 'yesterdays' dolls - looking ahead to a bright 2010...... (dolls featured here will be offered for sale in my bigcartel shop next week.....)

Madame January with her tiny heart ---- one of two drawings I have made today, as I begin my year of 'daily drawings'..... You can see both of today's drawings in my etsy shop now.

I'm feeling slightly daunted by the year ahead, it is a whole year of expectations and exciting indeed! Yes I can be optimistic - heart beating a little faster - positive.... I send you best wishes for the year ahead x
