sketchbook sunday

And I'm back in the room already.... (well kind of)..... here are pages from my painting sketchbook. I've recently started to put together this black-paged spiral book as a home to all those small and tiny paintings, colour studies, ideas for paintings that I may or may not have a chance to work bigger. One day when I have a dedicated paint studio, who knows.... In the meantime, I have this book of gouache samplers.

I'm almost finished working on the layout for my forthcoming zine/book 'Dreamers' (yes it now has a title). I hope to have the book ready for my shop update next week.

Just some of the images that have caught my eye over the past few weeks, via my friends and contacts at Flickr. Many thanks to the artists featured here for sharing their work.

Such a rainy, sleety start to the week here..... I have some writing to do this morning, finishing words for a magazine (more about that soon). This week I shall be working on my drawings for my future zine/book, putting together original artist books, and stitching.... so a rather bookish, stitchy week ahead, good!

I'll be writing something here about my monoprint drawing process, later in the week.

Thanks for all your recent comments, much appreciated. This is the last Monday in February, and although it is a short month I feel so ready for Spring. I'll ignore the rain now and get on with my writing..... more soon, have a happy Monday.

sketchbook sunday

Pages inside my small moleskine sketchbook.....

I'm working on a new limited edition book/zine. These monoprint pages may make it into the book. Hoping to have it completed for March. Next week I will share more about my monoprint drawing process.

These photos were taken under lamplight. I quite like the yellowed tone. I like the pages in natural light too. All this recent drawing is feeling good. My daughter's been working in her own moleskine too and it's lovely to share time sketching.

Enjoy your Sunday evening.

translating ideas

I've been drawing. I'm enjoying the series of 'mystics' drawings in my sketchbook..... and have been making monoprint drawings inspired by the 'mystics'. My pencil drawings are intricate and relate to my stitch work too. I like my monoprint drawings to have something inky and mysterious about them. The interest for me is to translate and develop ideas between media, not copy over. I'm working on some new smaller stitched works, rather like my 'moonlit' style - again inspired by the drawings.... one thing leads to another..... I have this and that and another in progress right now.....

This photo was taken under lamplight as it's already dark here.

Hope your week is going well.

from a year ago

Work from a year ago - 'a poem often writes itself'.... Interesting to look back and see what was happening creative making-wise a whole twelve months ago. I'm in that middle-of-everything state of play right now, with many projects just getting started and not a lot of work that feels ready for showing.... But that's ok. It's half-term break here so I'm busy with family and working too. Today we went to see Ponyo, a lovely Japanese movie. Well worth seeing.

Hope to share more with you soon.

sketchbook sunday

A page from my large moleskine sketchbook. One of my obsessions is religious iconography. I'm working on a series of pages that explore this, in my own way.

I hope you have enjoyed your weekend. A St. Valentine's weekend, oh yes. Love and light always x Next week is half-term here, so I'll be busy busy.

Take care x

The Rialto

The Rialto no 68 - just published. I have two poems in this issue. Very pleased to be published in this leading British poetry journal. I've appeared a few times previously and it's always a pleasure to receive and read my contributor's copy, arrived today. Copies may be purchased from The Rialto website - I think this one will be available shortly and of course you can subscribe to the journal. The beautiful linocut artwork for this cover is by Penny Bhadresa.

I had set aside today to work on my sketchbooks and drawings. But some workmen have turned up in the road outside and there's a lot of drilling and humming going on. I should be able to work through it but I'm easily distracted today. I may just sit and start to hand stitch my next 'breathing space' fabric collage.....

Enjoy your Friday x

yesterdays update - light and shadows

Attempting to photograph new yesterdays today..... I felt I was chasing the light as it moved from room to room. And slowly slipped out of the house..... To capture the beauty of these nostalgic doll ornaments, I like to show them in a 'certain light'. So here we are, two of the newcomers. I am just about to make five new yesterdays available, in just a moment....

***
very sad news today, the death of Alexander McQueen.... British designer, a great inspiration...

new yesterdays for tomorrow

new yesterdays for tomorrow.... three of the yesterdays to be available in my shop tomorrow.... (yes I know today, yesterday, tomorrow.... time is an illusion when it comes to it, really, maybe?).... there may be a couple more. I hand stitch each carefully, this takes time and I don't like to rush them.

I've just posted a new poem 'Sepia' over at Nevering.

Natural dyes - tiny samples & alkanet

When I dye strips of cotton there are of course loose and tangled threads involved. I pull/tidy them and keep them as tiny samples of the dye results. So here's a recent selection of colours, from left to right: alkanet, turmeric, weld, weld dipped in logwood to make a grey-green, madder, onion skins and feverfew.

Yesterday Eva asked if my alkanet dye results had a hint of purple.... well no, although I think you can obtain lavender type tones on wool and silk and with various modifers.... I have recently dyed two different kinds of white cotton fabric. One is a lovely medium weight bleached cotton, the other is a finer lawn cotton. They are both white to begin with, both prepared the same way, but here are the results from the same dye bath.

Both lovely stone or dove grey. I've dyed with alkanet now and then in the past and always get slightly different results. I tried alkanet on wool a few years ago and really did not achieve much of a colour/result. This may very well have been due to the quality of the dried dye stuff I was using. (Always something to consider is if you have what it says it is.) I think it is possible to get some lovely tones on wool.

You may read that alkanet is used to obtain red shades and is traditionally used in cosmetics. This is true, but the red is obtained by using alcohol and extracting the colour. I have read of dyers soaking dried roots in methylated spirits for several weeks and then experimenting, but this is not something that appeals to me.

Alkanet is a bright blue flowering plant that grows wild and has naturalised in parts of the UK. When I first attempted to use it I was telling a friend about this blue flower with magical roots and how it is used in dye to obtain grey shades.... and then she told me she had just been to visit a relative who lived in a rural cottage with alkanet in huge swathes all around. It was a wild weed, she said. I could imagine this bright blue fairytale scene - oh if only I had talked to her before her trip, perhaps she might have collected a few roots or seeds:) Having said that, there is, just to confuse you, more than one plant known as alkanet growing in the UK. There's dyer's alkanet Alkanna tinctoria and then there is green alkanet Pentaglottis sempervirens. I think I am right in saying they can both be used for dye. But I have only used the dyers alkanet and from a dye supplier. I get all my dried dyes from the same supplier who I know sells the best quality they can get. Although I do like to use my own plants and wild gatherings, there are times when dried dye stuff is what is needed.

I don't grow alkanet myself right now, but will try it, as it really is a pretty plant with historical roots, of course.

I have a long seed shopping list that needs to be whittled down a little, as I really don't have enough space for everything! I have use of a very small garden (as a tenant I can't do too much to it), and I grow mostly in large containers. A mix of pots, old crates and my favourite: wicker baskets. I know this year I want to grow woad and many more black violas. The black violas last Summer gave such a lovely blue colour that has a good lightfastness from looking at things I've had out on display etc... It's a bonus they also happen to be one of my favourite flowers.

I now have surprise sample packets of natural dyed cotton fabrics in my shop. I'll be dyeing a wide variety of plant/colour over the coming months, so there will always be something different and each selection will be different.

Another mosaic monday for you...... these are just some of the images that have caught my eye over the past few weeks. Many thanks to the artists and photographers featured for sharing their work via my Flickr contacts.

We have snowflakes that are not settling, a cold-ish, grey start to the week. Stood at the kitchen sink this morning I looked out at the white sky and saw a crow holding a tiny mouse in its feet - the perfect shapes of the creatures against the clouds. A powerful image for a Monday morning. I'm not going to read too much into that one....

This week I've plenty of creative work to be getting ahead with.....

On Thursday, I shall be, as suggested last week, updating my shop with a new selection of yesterdays. They will become available at around 9pm Thursday UK time.

I've sold several of my natural dye fabric packets (thank you) so more dyeing is ongoing.....recently some lovely greys from alkanet.....

Drawing, writing notes, putting together new ideas.....

Many thanks to everyone for your recent comments. Thanks to Nina and Karen for recent mentions, and to anyone else who has kindly mentioned my work.

I hope you have a very good week x

sketchbook sunday

recent drawings in my sketchbooks..... I've been working on themed pages, giving myself starting points. For example: headscarves.

I'm doing a lot of drawing just lately. I'm working toward putting together a zine and hope to have it ready for you to see in March.

These photos were taken under lamplight, as it's late in the evening as I put this post together. I hope you have had a good weekend. I'm looking forward to a creatively busy week ahead. Until tomorrow..... good night x

collecting vintage photographs

Several vintage photographs from my personal collection.... I enjoy these so much. The 'other side' to a photo can give clues and help build a story. Imagine a young woman and her family getting ready to have their photograph taken, and why? Travelling to the photographer's premises in Pimlico or Kentish Town, perhaps, as the above suggest. How it was then. Was the studio a tiny little shop or a splendidly draped emporium filled with props, ornate chairs and screens. Did the photographer smile and did he ask his clients to smile? (I prefer photographs of people who are not smiling. I think they tell more about themselves when they are 'composed' which is not to suggest they feel any less awkward, and often a certain awkwardness gives a portrait a particular quality that says something more....)

There are so many questions. What happened next? And why do I now own the photograph. What happened to the photograph between the day it was taken and today.

Looking for faces amongst my photography collection to use in my artwork, my yesterdays dolls, I work on my own gut feeling about a person. I don't know them and they don't know why I have possession of their portrait. It's a strange thing to consider I might find them appealing because something about them reminds me of myself.

Photographs of 'everyday people' are part of our social history and I like the mystery these can offer a collector. I also enjoy not only the faces but the dress and designs of the day. It's the little details that speak the loudest, some times. See the girl above, her interesting corset belt. That kind of detail might find its way into a drawing or stitched piece one day. I'm looking through my photos to inspire my sketchbooks.

Photographed in sepia or black and white, a person appears not exactly different but you might notice a certain look about them that colour just doesn't get. It's to do with mood, light and shade. And perhaps a nostalgia for a time before we felt bombarded by colourful flickering realism.

I like handwriting on the backs of photo cards. See above someone has written in their calligraphic fountain ink: 'To dear cousin Nellie, with love from Minna 16/8/98' - now when I first read the date I thought of course 1998 - and then realised quickly this was unlikely. So Minna wrote this in 1898. A long time ago now. Several generations on, I wonder what is happening in Nellie and Minna's family? (and what is Minna short for, I wonder? I am right in reading that as Minna?)

*

My recent shop update featured a few new yesterdays dolls - and these sold very quickly, thank you. I have had requests for more to be available and am working on that. So, although my next main shop update will be at the start of March, I shall add a few new yesterdays to my shop toward the end of next week. I'll let you know when. I try to vary day and time. Thanks!

light and shade

dark-haired doll sits upon her novel chair, thinking of nothing and everything, everything and nothing.....

many thanks to everyone who has visited my shop to see yesterday's update....

Today was one of those 'typical' days of damp drizzle turning into fog.... the kind of weather you may associate with England. I had a quick look at things in the garden to work out a plan for future fabric dyeing.... which plants might offer fresh growth and when. Of course nothing really now. Still rather early in the year for using fresh plants, except ivy perhaps comes to mind.... but I do see the first signs, and that is a good feeling on this foggy day....

I hope your week is going well and more soon x

I ship worldwide. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. I will also reserve items for two days, if this helps, just email.

Wait for me
artist book - mixed media 10.5cm tall - combining machine embroidery stitch work with monoprint drawing, an original vintage photograph, text from old books, hand dyed fabric, painted papers....

No mosaic this week, my apologies, the mosaic-ing is taking a break as I'm so busy with my own work....

A very chilly start to February here - we woke to a frosting of snow and ice but the sun is out and the birds are busy too.... I hope things are ok where you are.

Tomorrow afternoon is my shop update. I'll share here a few more photos before then.

Many thanks for all your kind comments - now I'm going to write a list of things to finish and photograph today, and make some coffee to help with that list..... more soon x
