threads of imagination

A new moonlit piece! Many tiny, intense stitches together making many tiny intense faces, a swirling dream world..... 'threads of imagination' - this piece could be worn as a brooch, at 8 x 7cm, or could look fab in a frame.....

in my shop a little later on today .... along with a new selection of yesterdays!

April skies yesterdays

A selection of yesterdays - I've been making a variety of sizes this week, including a little wee chap. I call this little face Jack. I don't usually name all the faces these days, but he is Jack to me. I think of them as siblings, despite the faces coming from different times and families. They are all anonymous faces from my collection of vintage photographs.... these and perhaps a few others will be in my shop tomorrow evening...... I've photographed this grouping in front of an oil painting, one of my own from a couple of years ago. Perhaps the yesterdays think of the painting as a theatre backdrop.... perhaps I should make them a little theatre with curtains?..... more soon x

auriculas

I'm busy stitching and working on new new new ---- and I shall share more soon. Meanwhile, in my tiny patio garden, a few of my auricula collection. April and May are the months of Auriculas. But other flowers are blooming too. I noted this morning the lungwort (pulmonaria) are very popular with bees. Pausing for a moment in the garden, I watched a sequence of bee movements, one bee after the next went to the pale pink and blue flowers..... they did not go to the cherry blossom or the pansies, just the lungwort and in the exact same rhythm..... I love bees and their mysteries....

A new mosaic of favourites - it's been a while! Many thanks to the artists and makers featured here for sharing their work via my Flickr contacts. I really enjoy seeing other work and not my own all the time! Time slips by so quickly and it's inspiring to look out, look beyond my own work desk and see what is being made. I find it heartening to see such a variety. I think the biggest compliment anyone can say is: your work looks like your work! I know I can say that about everyone featured in this mosaic and that is what I strive toward too.........

You may know that we are currently experiencing Election Fever in the UK. I admit I am somewhat distracted by it, but it's a worthwhile distraction. I won't 'bore' you with my personal politics here, just to say I do get passionately engaged in my own quiet way... However, the day to day life of a creative person must also involve going into her own little bubble and making stuff. So that is what I will be attempting to do this week, as always.

So this week I am making new yesterdays dolls and they will appear in my shop on Thursday, along with a few other new things.

Many thanks to everyone last week who visited my shop and a special thanks to anyone who purchased. I will be sending packages out now that the air traffic situation is getting back to some kind of 'normal'. Thank you.

I will hope to share with you a variety of new work and ideas this week..... take care and have a good Monday x

Romantic series - papier mache

I've completed three jugs for my Romantic series, so far.... For some time now there's been the idea in mind: combining embroidery with papier mache. How do I do this? These demonstrate different approaches. Each jug vessel is an individual piece with its own personality - there is nothing uniform about them at all. I like the shapes of the handles and how they work in relation to the figures, and I hope you do too. I have further ideas now I want to explore....

These three will be in my shop - they are there now! along with a selection of other Romantic series pieces.

IMPORTANT must not forget to say: due to the air travel situation (*see yesterday's post) I am happy to reserve any item you might wish to purchase. Once things are moving again I will be in touch with you again to ask for payment. You can email me or use the contact link in my shop (ccullis at gmail dot com) - thanks!

Next week I'll be adding to my shop new yesterdays dolls and other natural dye items.

I hope you will take a look later, thanks x

love & embroidery

Love & embroidery.... a mixed media collage - as others who work with found text and collage may know, it is those chance moments of finding little phrases and juxtapositions of words that can make something really feel just so.... and so it was that I found the snippet of words 'love embroidery' in a book I was leafing through and of course........ this couple's story is all about the entanglement of desire and love and stitches perhaps.....

A happy Monday to you.... another fine day here, just a little hazy cloud in the sky and no planes..... (please see my note about the planes and airmail below!)

I've been busy over the past several days working on this new 'Romantics' series. I've been creating collage pieces, some quite tiny, others small book size. I'm making papier mache vessels (see yesterday) and a few wearable pieces. All in all, I feel quite positive about this new series and how it is flowing.... it feels heartfelt and like authentic sharing of creative ideas should be, so that's good.......

Tomorrow I shall be updating my shop with a selection of new work.

*As you may know much of Europe has a major problem with air travel and this of course impacts on airmail deliveries. We are all hoping that the problem of the volcanic ash cloud will literally blow away quite soon, but in the mean time many people are affected and we all have to think our way around any issues..... If you are outside the UK I would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase my work regardless and I will send it to you as soon as I can. We can do this two ways: you can go ahead with the purchase and I will keep in touch with you, letting you know exactly when your parcel has been posted. I won't post anything airmail until things are moving again. Alternatively, I am happy to reserve any item you are interested in. Once things are moving again I will get in touch with you to ask that you go ahead with your purchase. To reserve an item you can contact me via my shop site or email me direct: ccullis at gmail dot com

UK customers, I shall send your packages out as usual, many thanks.

This is a smaller embroidery portrait.... I like her slight tilt, a little shy perhaps.... but seeking bliss....

More new work soon - may I wish you a good start to the week x

mixed media & sketchbook

It has been a lovely warm day, good for working on papier mache...... I created this mixed media jug featuring a Romantic figure in machine embroidery stitch.... the stitch is not glued to the jug, but has been stitched through linen and paper together, so that the paper surrounding the stitch can be adhered to the jug..... yes? Inspired by my love of ceramics, and being something of a frustrated potter who does not potter.... The jug has been made using pages from DH Lawrence's 'Women in Love' one of my favourite books. I buy copies of books from my local Oxfam shop - and will only use books that I like.

A two page spread from my small moleskine.... The line work is quite bold here because I was being lazy drawing in bed and the only pencil in reach was an 8B..... well that's my excuse...

I hope you have had a good weekend. Next week I am busy continuing to create new work, and shall be updating my shop on Tuesday.

Thanks always for your comments this week and always....

blue skies

It's a beautiful blue sky Saturday.... I'd love to do more in the garden but I've run out of potting compost, so I've come indoors to share this photo.... You may know that we have a big volcanic ash problem up there in the atmosphere, no flights from main airports and so there are no vapour trails in the sky.... but actually I have seen a few light aircraft, local low flights and a hot air balloon.... but still it is quieter.....

New natural dyes are in progress - slowly brewing - all plants from the garden: violas, marjoram, nettles..... In future weeks I'll be offering particular selections of fabrics and dyed wool in my shop, so look out for those to come......

Tomorrow I'll share some new sketchbook drawings x

work in progress

Busy busy busy..... making stitches I have a certain feel in mind and so I continue to work the threads until something, or someone arrives..... I'm looking forward to sharing more soon as these pieces come to life....

I have a poem to share later over at nevering - it's there now!

I wish you a creative, happy weekend x

New Romantics

Do not forget to dream (wake up) - a mixed media collage - book format....

I've spent the past few days or more working intensely on this new series. Yes I have renamed the series - it began as 'messengers' - but I have now decided upon 'Romantics'..... this works for me as I find myself stitching the most tiny yet thoughtful figures I have ever stitched....
Three tiny figures.... quite primitive in style, my approach is to stitch using different speeds/tensions and make use of the 'wrong' or 'bobbin' side..... These are three individual cards and will be offered for sale as smaller little works to frame perhaps.

What shall I sing? A curious figure with distinctive threads to suggest a sense of movement and anticipation..... This is again a smaller collage to frame.

the flux of the ghost life..... this is a smaller textile collage or brooch..... can I say this is my favourite piece yet? Of course these are the first of the series and there will be more to come....

I shall be updating my shop with a selection of these 'Romantics' pieces early next week, Tuesday 2oth April.....

Until then, I still have more stitches to create. My daily April photograph has slipped by a little in the past few days, such is life when the the thread and papers take over.... ah well......

monday

A Happy Monday to you - no mosaic this week - there will be another selection of favourites in a few weeks perhaps.... I don't feel I can let a Monday go by without saying hello here so.... I'm sharing a few photos. Above you see the flower buds of Auricula 'Cuckoo Fair'.... who could not like a flower with such a name? I think it will be a lovely dark bloom. I do like Auriculas, especially the yellows and darks, and those with farina (the grey-white coating that you see here)....

A little while ago I made this teeny tiny heart.... it's all about holding it in your hand again.... it has a gently decadent feel to it, perhaps like my own!:)

This week I shall be sharing here a selection of new work, the first of my 'messengers' series of stitched and mixed media figures. I have several pieces coming together and I would like to show here.

Enjoy your week x

sketchbook sunday

Recent figures in my small moleskine.... I've been thinking about, drawing and stitching full-length figures (rather than just head portraits, for example...)..... thinking about the work of Aubrey Beardsley and the rather intense 'outsider art' drawings of Malcolm McKesson, and others.....

a few faces from a little while ago....

I'm attempting to 'loosen up', make my machine work a little more abstract-organic-primitive.... so drawing with my eyes closed helps me with this...... Try drawing with your eyes closed. Or try drawing with your 'other' hand and see how the feeling alters, see the mark-making and see if this might lead somewhere..... I got into drawing with 'the other hand' via a writer's workshop exercise. The participants were asked to draw a fairytale character with their non-writing or 'other hand' and then write about the character they had managed to draw.... it was a revealing way into writing.....

a sketch from my larger moleskine..... yes I am attempting to draw figures wearing a little less.... perhaps I am letting my guard down a little these days, I just want to challenge myself to make drawings that are revealing and explore different aspects of the psyche / self......

as always, thanks for your recent comments, much appreciated x

messengers - courtier

courtier - this is a new work, part of a series I am currently developing = 'messengers'. These small works are challenging me to consider the physical lines and energy that make a figure. I am considering how to say the strengths and fragility of a figure with a flow of line and directness. For a while I've felt slightly disenchanted with how my stitch work was becoming just so intensely delighted with detail and colouring in - not that I felt it was wrong but I have had that need to follow a different energy path for a while, if that makes sense... I hope so. I'm working now with a very simple selection of thread and fabric and hue. I want these messengers to have their say, without me pushing it too much.

Today has been so lovely and warm and sunny.... my daughter is thirteen today! We shared strawberries and cake with family.

Enjoy your weekend x

but love....

but love is freedom - a smaller mixed media piece, could be worn as a brooch....

I'm working on smaller works. These seem to suit my scatter-brain right now, as we have sunshine, the garden is calling, holidays.... I do like working on pieces that fit into my hand, as you may know already.

Hope your week is going well and thanks for your comments x

A Happy Easter Monday to you! Thanks to all the artists and photographers featured here for sharing their work via my Flickr contacts. These are just a few of the many images that have caught my eye over the past few weeks....

Apologies for not sharing a sketchbook post yesterday - I had planned to do so, but a busy Easter Sunday and rather too much chocolate led me to bed early:)

So I'll share here what I was going to share yesterday.... Rather than sketchbook drawings I wanted to show you the recently re-jigged wall in our living room. We live in a small house and this is the one wall in our living room that has the best opportunity for display. I like to revise the wall every 3-4 months. I recycle frames and choose a certain feel for it. This time around I wanted to display some of the sketchbook drawings that I have made recently. So I scanned and made inkjet prints of several drawings, then as a family we selected the drawings we all liked the best. So the top two portraits are from my sketchbooks.

The drawing in the white frame, lower right, is an original sketch that I made recently and decided I liked and would keep for our wall.

The paintings are a few recent ones that I have been working on. They are gouache painted on board. Sprayed with varnish, gouache takes on a different, less chalky, almost oil or tempera look that I quite like. I've propped these paintings on the wall. Not everything has to be fixed. It's useful for me to have these up on display, as I plan to make some larger paintings of a similar kind. The doll ornaments are of course 'yesterdays' - two that I have kept/made for my own home. The long-eared girl on the right has been up there for a while but she likes it there and seems to 'fit' with every recent display. The mixed media work is less recent. Infact, the pointy hat character in the central box frame is from a few years ago but is a favourite piece that moves about the house. Of course not all of this is mine - the textile heart is a lovely addition made by Carolyn Saxby - Love Stitching Red.

Perhaps this wall will change again later in the year, but for now it's good to turn and see a different display.

abstracts & colours

I so enjoy painting abstractly..... I've worked with greys and a hint of yellow before now but I go back to it..... again..... My daughter said: 'it's like four seasons of weather'.... work in progress, a little painting now and then...... I want to work much bigger some time - I keep saying that. I will do it soon.....

enjoy your weekend and if you are celebrating Easter, enjoy your celebrations and chocolate x

First of April.....
