waiting for flowers - auricula

having a break from stitching this week (due to dodgy shoulder and a spring cold ahoo)..... I have been busy with both paint and clay..... painting a little differently, for a change... as I like my 'main style' but need a break from it now and then....

larger than tiny heads

larger than tiny sculpted heads... they have changed since this shot was taken yesterday.... as they dry so I tweak..... and edit the cracks....

I hope you are enjoying some sunshine where you are - it has been a sunshiney few days here..... tiny head later today....

I used to worry when cracks began to appear..... but now I will them, a little.... I think they lend a portrait a certain vulnerability.... I don't have total control.

A new poem 'Clay' over at nevering.

folk art paintings

folk art paintings

folk art paintings

the spring sunshine has inspired a little more colour.... inspired by naive, folk art paintings, these still lifes are quite small in scale and are painted on board (plywood)..... nice to prop on a shelf. My ten-year-old son says they are 'clean paintings' rather than my usual 'bit messier' paintings... I think I know what he means... he likes the little crow.

Many thanks to the artists featured above, for sharing their work via my Flickr contacts!

A Happy Spring to you.... I woke this morning with one ear on the radio, listening to the news (of conflict and survival) and the other ear tuned into bird song... and the calling of an owl.... I won't forget the morning last summer when I woke up as early as usual, and looked out the bedroom window to see so many tiny bats flying. I sometimes forget, here in suburbia, just how many creatures share this space... This morning hearing the owl is my excuse for staying in bed for another five minutes. And so another week begins....

My washing machine is buzzing at me to go and peg out the laundry (we all have our humdrum tasks) - but I am looking forward to a busy time working on new clay vessels and drawings and stitch...... All of which shall be seen this week, I hope. The tiny heads have reached 80 and will continue on.

So you are welcome to visit my shop any time, and I'll be adding new work through this week.... I have sold about half the copies of novembermoon zine no. 3 - thank you! Thanks for all the encouraging feedback I have received.

Take care and enjoy your week x

A lovely Spring feeling this morning! Yes and the sun is actually shining here..... Many thanks to the artists featured. Please follow the links for more details and to reveal what may be behind the 'white squares'.....
A busy week as always for me. I am packaging up and sending today. Stitching, painting and making tiny heads are on the happy-to-make list. I am getting closer to that 100 tiny heads, I can see the tiny smile ahead.... So long as I make it to 100 I am pleased and beyond, who knows, I may make it to 365 and would like to try.

Lots of new in my shop and adding regularly, so pop by and see....

Have a very good week x

Today is International Womens Day - so I felt inspired to make a female head today, getting stronger every day.......(and the long-eared personalities may return later in the month.....)

Today is also Shrove Tuesday or pancake day here in the UK..... my son took a frying pan and a pancake into school this morning and came second in the pancake race....

Sammiam asked yesterday re: sculpting the heads and if I make them ahead of time.... To explain again for anyone who missed things starting in January - I create the head using air dry clay (I use sculpt dry which is less 'wet' than some clays of this kind and dries quickly). The head is created the night before or quite often on the morning....

So for today's head here's a tiny timetable -

7.25am make the head (whilst discussing today's school timetable with my daughter) - leave the head on kitchen windowsill to dry.

12.55 after a busy morning of working on stitch, go into kitchen to make lunch and note there are cracks from drying out - so make repairs by skimming over cracks with wet clay.

2.25 head has been sitting in the sun and is now quite dry - dry enough to paint. I paint the face and leave it to dry before varnishing.

3.45 back from school pick-up- quickly add a coat of tinted varnish, photograph and put image on Flickr.... blog

Jeanette asked if I sometimes feel less than motivated to make/paint a tiny head.... and yes I'll be honest there have been a few days when I am tired or just not impressed with what I have made. But I have so far got over that. If - and this is only an if - I find myself becoming less and less interested then I will decide to end the project as it is. But so far, I am inspired to carry on and receiving all your feedback here and on flickr does help me and is much appreciated.

have a good weekend!

sometimes cracks happen...

If a head cracks, in my experience, it is best to either patch it up with slithers of wet clay and let it dry - or just go with the cracks and make them 'intended'.....

something about that sums up (my) life!
