monoprints - work in progress

80

sepia photographs, with my recent monoprint drawings.... I'm working on many smaller drawings. They will become elements of mixed media collages..... When I draw using this simple printmaking technique, I aim toward an expressive line and the figures are inspired by people, shadows, dolls, abstract shapes that suggest. I like to play with proportion and ambiguity....

These are work-in-progress shots. I'm aiming to offer new mixed media work later in April.

After a few glorious spring days, the sun is now back behind cloud and things are feeling more like an English March: white cloud, chilly feet....

I hope you enjoy your weekend x

these are just two of the several items I have added to my shop this afternoon.....

it is such a warm, delightful day here - the only caution is: might this be England's spring and summer combined in a few days?? It can happen like that some years....

A Sunny Spring Monday to you..... oh yes we are having a few glorious days here, and I hope you are enjoying the start of a new season in a good way where you are...... Many thanks to the artists, makers and photographers featured in this week's mosaic via my Flickr contacts. I am always looking to see what my Flickr contacts are sharing with the world and am very grateful to have several thousand photos to look at each week! I look for themes, connections and a shared moment that I can relate to. The people I have as contacts on Flickr are a varied bunch and I love that: from fine painters to homemakers, from collectors to gardeners to curators. Thank you - I really enjoy putting these mosaics together each week. They are, in some way, another kind of journaling...

This week then....

I am updating my shop tomorrow. Earlier in the week than has been the case recently. I've got new artwork on paper and perhaps a new stitch piece or two. We shall see. My zine decorum is now available of course, there are copies in the shop and thanks if you have already ordered a copy.

This is the final week of March and it's been a very busy month. I'm looking forward to my children being home ffrom school for their spring break - that begins at the end of this week. However, April will still be a busy month for me and I have many and various new projects lined up. I want to make some new mixed media books to offer in April and will be starting work on ideas this week.

Have a good start to your week x

a little book of spring & sketches

Yes it is spring and yes you know my first love is black and white (pictures, paintings - and yes movies) but a little colour works for me too:

So I finally made some time to make a new little book and this one is full of spring colours. Well, no pink, for some reason. Perhaps I'll make a cherry blossom pink book (some time, maybe, perhaps pink with black).

Inspired by the colour studies I made in the little book above, I've made a few new sketches combining my figures with abstract shape and colour..... These are also made using acrylics. Again a bit of change for me, as I tend to work nearly always in gouache. spring sketch II spring sketch I
spareness, essence, making a story with shapes and expression.... these two will be in my shop next week many thanks for your kind comments this week and always - hope you enjoy your Sunday.

a new zine - decorum

decorum

Today is the day I have had pencilled in my diary - it is zine day - another new zine from me. This time around I've put together a zine of poetry and artwork.

decorum explores a few obsessions: the language of historical costume, the process of painting, visiting art galleries, the intricacies of nature, vintage photography, dreams. A dozen poems with connections and overlapping ideas. There's a spring-like air about many of them. I think they are perhaps the most positive poems I've written in recent times. Colourful and maybe quietly revealing. I'm experimenting with mixing ideas and the things that nudge me awake.

Always a little apprehensive about making something with just my own input, I have edited and left the poems, then came back to them for a final polish. I hope you enjoy reading them.

The artwork came about quite easily, perhaps because the poems are very visually inspired. I have included a couple of my own paintings and collage artwork. The front image is one that captures the mood of decorum. Each zine I put together is a gentle learning process.

Why do I self-publish? Many artists put together zines - I like this opportunity to share both artwork and poems. Several of the poems in decorum have appeared previously on my nevering blog, several are completely new and previously unpublished.  Due to my family commitments, I don't get to poetry events and so this zine is my tiny way of putting something out there. One day yes perhaps a full-length poetry collection might happen, but to be honest I don't think I'm ready yet. Yes, I have been writing for many years but I want that first 'proper book' to be good, my best. In the meantime, I do have poems published in poetry journals from time to time, and am very grateful to the editors for reading my work. Making a little book like decorum allows me to share with an audience that might not read poetry journals. I can combine and present exactly as I wish, and with digital printing it is not so costly though still time consuming to put together, hand stitch the binding etc.... I've used lovely papers for this one and each zine comes with a professionally printed art postcard.

I like making zines and( I like collecting them too).

decorum is now available in my shop - I've also added a few other new pieces today.

rabbit brooches

rabbit brooches

Rabbit brooches

I just popped outside into our tiny garden to pick a few primroses for this photograph. After yet another foggy start, today looks very sunny indeed. We are set to have summery heat this afternoon - I will try to make the most of it. Thought I would share these new rabbit brooches with you - they will be in my shop tomorrow, along with a few other new items. They are quite inspired by my recent gouache paintings. I've kept the background stitching quietly simple, for these rabbits have quiet, thoughtful personalities....

hope your week is going well

A Good Monday to you from a rather foggy-but-should-be-sunnier later England..... It's the middle of March almost and we are so close to spring you can smell it (in a good way). The sunshine over the weekend has made a big difference to important things like daffodils growing by the side of the road as we walk up to school.... Enough waffling on about the weather etc... I should thank the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. A few white squares for you to 'explore'. Please click on links to find....
This week I am as always engrossed and busy still working on ongoing projects. I'll be working on new stitch and painting this week, and will be updating my shop later this week, Friday most likely, with a few new items.
And then next week, on Wednesday 21st March, I shall be offering my newest zine decorum - this will be a limited edition of 100 and will be the last zine - for a while - the next coming in October most likely.
If you were one of the three people to win zines for year from me, you will of course receive your copy of 'decorum' soon as poss.... If you would like to purchase a copy, there will be plenty in my shop from the 21st. Thank you.
I'm going to get on now with packages and getting postcards printed etc... have a very good start to the week and more soon....

Making some progress, slowly but surely, on my 100 portraits on brown paper - to be honest, I had hoped to be a little further along by now - but life is busy and full of ideas....  so here are three new ones: 33, 34, 35..... I'm enjoying these, so would rather just paint them when the mood comes around and will get there....

a close-up view of a new poetry cuff.... I am particularly pleased with the words for this. Always, I take time over the small poem fragments and ideas that I stitch, wishing for them to have some kind of universal meaning. This is dark grey stitching on pale pink dyed linen - the linen dyed with madder, which is a natural root dye.

These stitched works and others, as well as new paintings will be in my shop Friday.

A Happy sunny Monday to you - many thanks to the artists featured in this week's mosaic of inspiration. Please follow links for more info etc....

This week, I have plenty happening as always. Time will be made to work on my new upcoming zine. Yes a new one coming - I can tell you today it is called Decorum - and is a zine of poetry with artwork. It will be available from Wednesday March 21st and will be a limited edition. I'm dithering about whether to make it 50 or 100, right now, I will let you know. My zine Home, published in January, is now 'sold out'.

So I look forward to sharing pictures of the new zine once it is 'ready'. Will write more about Decorum here, in the coming weeks.

Also this week, I am continuing on with my poetry in embroidery series as well as other embroidery and painting. Thanks to all for visiting my shop. I hope to have something new for you later in the week.

Hoping you have a very good week ahead.

sketchbook

sketchbookmarch4

This weekend I found/made some time to work in my drawing sketchbook. It's been a while since I worked in my 'pencil moleskine'. Here are some rabbity dreamers, inspired by folk art and old toys.

Today has been a strange weather day - with snow and hail stones, and a little sunshine. Despite the weather changes, I did get outside and tidy the garden ready for spring.

Hope you have had a good weekend and thanks always for your kind comments.

new

the song - poetry cuff

one of my new series of 'poetry stitches' - this poetry cuff has been stitched using my sewing machine as a handwriting tool - it is stitching on cotton fabric that has been carefully dyed with viola flowers. As you may know, I have experimented with natural dyes for some time and the fabrics I am using in the new poetry work was dyed some months ago. It has been a pleasure to go through my basket of special cotton and linen 'bits' and choose what will be which and what....  I've updated my shop with several new poetry embroidery items.....

black rabbit with curious stalk

and also a new selection of gouache sketches including this black rabbit holding a curious stalk.... I just love painting rabbits it seems - I think there could be some deep Jung/Freudian thing about personality going on here (my personality in relation to a rabbit) but I won't spoil your enjoyment ha. If you do have a moment please take a look at the full selection in my shop.
