portraits

portraits portraits - my 'classic' approach, using mostly shades of black.... I am working on a variety of sizes. It is interesting seeing the different sized portraits side by side. I'll share more of my process next week.

Have a good weekend

looking out

landscape

landscape - gouache

It's time to think about outside again - the sun is shining, now and then, and temperatures here are slowly rising, the days are getting just a bit longer ..... I am making a new series of smaller landscape paintings - (and portraits and poems too).

Sketchbook Sunday

For the past three or four months, or so, I've used acrylics in my sketchbook. I'm now taking a break from the heavier paint and am working in gouache. So now I am sketching once again in a lighter medium with all that it may offer, re-considering new and ongoing ideas.

new works for February - thanks always for your interest as I have worked on this newest selection now available. Just a reminder: I am happy to reserve any one artwork, for up to two weeks. I ship worldwide and offer free postage to the UK. Any questions please contact me, easy to do via my shop.

It's now back to the sketchbooks and notebooks for me, at least for the next several days. I have ideas for March and beyond but more about that later.

Enjoy your weekend.

two new

Here are two new paintings - just to share with you a glimpse at recently completed work. And also to say yes it is possible to work in different ways without feeling 'split'. It is ok. I know some people struggle with this idea, because they feel they must make their work highly identifiable. But looking at the brushstrokes and colours, the flow of the work, the ideas within - I think you can make connections here.

The 'woman and child' portrait is quite small and intimate in feel. It is a timeless moment. In contrast 'pixie' explores colour on a slightly larger, bolder scale: here are the colours of childhood and textures created by layering paint, creating a sense of memory and playfulness. So yes both explore memory and storytelling.

A happy Monday to you - it's a mild, overcast start to the week here. Every morning I look at a large pot of bulbs by our kitchen door - how they are slowly appearing and the sharp green emerging plants make me smile. We are halfway through February and looking forward to spring here. Above is a lively mosaic with spring and abstract pattern in mind. Thanks to all the artists/makers/photographers featured. Please follow links to discover more.

This week I am completing a few new artworks but mostly making decisions, photographing and writing up descriptions - all in preparation for my shop update this Friday. I'll be updating some time in the later afternoon. Expect to see a few 'sneak peeks' between now and then, perhaps. I promise colour, texture, stories.....

Have a good start to your week

three figures

this week has been a dreary old few days and I've spent my time working quietly. I have not taken many photographs - the light has been a problem but we are due to have better sunlight next week, so fingers crossed. So I am sharing here a photo via Instagram, work in progress.... I liked this but decided to work on the painting a little further. I wanted to retain some of the spontaneity and texture of the paint/figures.

I have a varied selection of work coming together, slowly. My next shop update will be next week, Friday 20th February.

A milder start to the week here - and sunshine. Many thanks to all the artists and photographers featured in this mosaic. Please follow links to discover more.

I'm working quietly on new artworks. At this stage of things I find just getting stuck in, and working slowly but surely, is the best way to proceed. I can tell you I have new interior/figure paintings, new abstracts and still-life paintings all in progress or completed. My next shop update will be next week, most likely the Thursday or Friday. I'll make a decision on that by the end of this week, all being well.

Thanks always for your comments here.

Have a good start to your week.

Sketchbook Sunday

My sketchbooks pages help me work out colour combinations, shapes and the process for layering colours. I work freely, with no set image-making in mind - except perhaps a simple idea: a figure, a pattern. Some of the pages in my sketchbooks are made very quickly, some are worked to create something yet more tangible.

daffodils and snow

daffodils and snow

Daffodils on the windowsill, snow outside. I found that blue and white pot on the left in a charity shop and bought it for tuppence (well, £2.50). It is just right for tiny daffodil bulbs. The jug is one I made about a decade ago now, during the brief period I had a kiln. The snow is melting now and the sun is trying to come out. Last night was the coldest so far this year.

Happy February to you - we're moving a little further toward spring, so I'm looking out for signs of flowers and colours to come.... thanks to all the artists/photographers featured in this week's mosaic, please follow links to discover more.

A chilly start to the week here. It is now getting dark and there's a big bright moon in the sky, so another cold night ahead. This week I am continuing on with new paintings, working in my sketchbooks and more. Thanks always for your comments here. I'll try to share a post or two as the week goes by. Have a good start to February.
