A happy Monday to you, last Monday in July - how's the summer where you are? England is currently revisiting April weather. Just for a change. It has been a cool, slightly-looks-like-rain, windy start to the week here.

Many thanks always to my Flickr contacts featured in this week's mosaic. I hope you might have time to follow links and discover more.

This week I am quietly working on new designs - both embroidery and new paintings. I'm thinking ahead to autumn and beyond. I'll be sharing more here in the near future.

I hope to share with you a few sketchbook pages and more, later this week.

exhibition- making connections

july15-exh1

The 'making connections' exhibition in Chatham Kent has been running for several days now.... (see my previous post). I am very grateful to collaborator/curator Alison Swan for the photographs she sent me recently. With her permissions I am sharing a few here. If you can get to Chatham do get there in the next few days as the show finishes on the 26th.

Meanwhile, I am working on a new embroidery-based project and will share more about this in the near future......

Hello, a happy Monday to you - a rather overcast and humid start to the week here. I am hoping things brighten up. In the meantime, it has been a pleasure to select images for this week's mosaic of inspiration via my Flickr contacts. Thanks to all the artists and photographers featured. Please as always follow links to discover more.

This week the pace is a little less hectic for me - I am working quietly in my sketchbooks, planning new work. Over the coming weeks I'll be designing and making for my autumn collections! Expect to see a few little sneak-peeks over the summer.

Thanks to everyone for visiting my shop since I updated last Wednesday. Several paintings and drawings have now been sent out - much appreciated. I'm around all summer to send out packages and can reserve works for up to two weeks, just send a message via my shop.

I'm also continuing on with my July writing project over at my writing blog nevering. I'm writing and posting a tiny story each day this month.

Have a good week and more soon.

A happy Monday to you - a dull damp start to the week here - rather humid and muggy but we will live through it to see brighter days! Many thanks to all the artists featured in this week's mosaic. A very inspiring one with so much detail to explore, I think. Please follow links to discover more.

This week: I am updating my shop on Wednesday at about 2pm UK time. This will be my final summer update. (After this my next update will be at the beginning of September). I'm particularly happy to be offering a very fine selection of my still life painting and figure drawings etc.. I hope as always that you enjoy taking a look. If you would like to reserve an artwork I can do that once the shop has been updated - one item for up to two weeks. I'll be around all summer to post out packages. Thanks always.

My summer plans: I will be working through the coming weeks on new work for autumn. Also looking forward to spending some time with my family and having a few special days out. I have a variety of new ideas for future art and writing projects, so need to just explore these quietly over the coming weeks. Once we are into autumn it's all systems go, thinking of holiday shopping etc... so summer is my time to explore, consider and plan ahead. I hope to share some of that with you here. I hope also to post a few special blog entries all about inspiring artists and places.

Have a good start to your week, more soon.

still life continued

two paintings - bowl still lifes

bowl - (some meanings) - home, keeping, shelter, mother, womb, contained, resting, world, planet, earth, holding, circle, travel within, contemplation, open-ended, safe, timeless, hand, water, sky.....

two vessels

Continuing on with my still life painting, and exploring a heavier paint..... these are all painted using a more recent technique of layering up a lot of paint and working into it to achieve interesting texture and marks. I am looking to create strong contemplative images, timeless compositions with a 'simplicity' - and with areas of complexity within. The background is just as vital as the object described.

The support/surface I work on is cotton or linen on card - the card is heavy mount board. The paintings can be framed but I would also admit to displaying them 'as is' - for a more casual look.

There are so many possibilities and I feel these new paintings have offered me the opportunity to really get into the paint - quite literally with my fingers covered with it - and yet the finished paintings invite me to take a step back and find a quiet space within.

I hope you enjoy looking at these - I have a growing selection and will not preview everything here, so please do check my shop update next week, Wednesday at 2pm.

Making Connections - upcoming show

Making Connections - 15th - 26th July Sun Pier Gallery, Chatham Kent.

Last year I was asked by ceramics artist Alison Swan if I might like to 'share connections' and participate in a group show. The idea behind the show is to find and explore connections between artists working in different media. Alison and I agreed that we do indeed share an interest in memory and storytelling. And so we began a correspondence, deciding on what to include. It was agreed that alongside the ceramic shoes Alison creates I would show a small selection of gouache portraits from my work last year, plus a selection of tiny books and sketchbooks - a chance to display a little of my eclectic book-based work.

The other artists featured in this group-curated show work with a variety of media. The group have worked in pairs to establish connections. Most of the group are local to each other, but Alison and I have worked 'long distance' on this project as of course I am in Surrey and she is in Kent.

Alison Swan's exquisite shoes may be the starting point for many stories and conversations. The shoes have a beauty of strength and suggestion of vulnerability: a gentle, quiet presence.

If you get the chance to visit this exhibition please do. Below are examples of ceramic shoes by Alison Swan.

Happy Monday to you, a pleasant start to the week here - sunny but not too hot. Thanks to all the artists and photographers featured in this mosaic, as always a pleasure to see the work made by others. Please follow links to discover more.

Sale news: I have just two pieces of embroidery artwork in my shop right now - and they are now being offered at a 'last chance' sale price. If you would like to purchase then these pieces will only be offered at this price for a limited time.  I have also added a small selection of other works to my sale section. Take a look here.

My next shop update will be on Wednesday 15th (I've pencilled in a time of  2pm for this one, to be confirmed nearer the day).

So this week I am continuing to work on new paintings, drawings and other projects. I'll be sharing more with you soon. Besides my visual work I am currently writing a series of flash fiction (very tiny stories) over at my notebook blog nevering. I am aiming to post a new story most days during July. You are welcome to read at any time, of course. Here is a link to today's story 'Ice-cream'.

Have a good start to your week!

new still life

bonsai dish with leafy herbs

bonsai dish with leafy herbs

These paintings embrace my more recent approach of using heavier paint, creating layers, mixing colour as I work, revealing new colours and texture. These paintings may appear 'simple' but are worked with great consideration and with a certain desire for little areas of complexity within the 'simplicity'. I build up layers of paint and work into them. Tone and shape need to work together, I am working toward a harmony.

green dish with small-leaved plant

What I am aiming toward is expressing how it is to see the plant, the feeling of it. When I sit in my own tiny garden I look at the plants growing there and note how some may change very rapidly whilst others take their own gentle time..... I note the light and shade on a stem and how leaves are not uniform....
