GIVEAWAY - embroidery brooch

It is always a pleasure to offer a little giveaway here on my blog - I don't do this so very often, so when I do, I like to make it a special one.....

As you may know I've been quite busy designing and making new embroidery works.... One thing on my to-do list was to design smaller embroidery brooches. I've made portrait brooches before now but wished to offer something that showcased my intricate stitch work. Here you see a group of tiny dreaming faces. Rather than the usual oval shape, I decided upon a more rectangular yet curved design.

I also wanted to be able to offer these new smaller brooches at a modest price, say less than £20.... So you will see next week (when I update my shop) a few of these new brooches available, each unique, different colours....

But before my shop update next week - I'm offering you the chance to 'win' this little brooch.

I took the opportunity to photograph the brooch in different ways. Here it is pinned to a scarf - a scarf that I use as a curtain tie.....

Amongst my reels of cotton thread.....

and worn as a brooch - the dark pink thread is a new colour for me to use in this way - but as you may have noted I'm experimenting more with my use of colour.

If you would like to own this brooch - and I have only the one to giveaway - then please do leave a comment here on this post. (Comments left elsewhere don't count - but if you are shy you can email me to enter). Just leave a comment saying hello. This giveaway is open to anyone, in the UK or overseas.

You have until next Monday morning at 9am UK time. I will add all names into a hat and one name will be picked out at random. Please check back on Monday to find out if you have been lucky..... and thank you.

works on paper - stories in colour

After some consideration I have come to understand that I love my embroidery work and want it to be my focus, but do not want to stop painting. The painting and the embroidery together allow me to explore a wide range of ideas and storytelling. I wish to suggest stories, to offer ways-in to narratives and to give hints and provoke ideas. Rather than say 'this is one story', I prefer to suggest many in one. It's been a pleasure over the years for me to share my painting work and for people to tell me what they see and they stories they find within.....

I am happy now with my plans for the future: working in my embroidery studio and also painting as time allows. You will see a new series of works on paper appearing in my shop over the coming weeks and months. I wish to continue to explore both 'figure stories' and still life. Here is a selection of work to come.....

Monday here again - and thanks always to the photographers, artists and makers featured in this week's mosaic. Follow links to discover so much more.... I put together these mosaics as a way to share inspiration, inspiring images by other artists - and because I just love to find connections and find ways to link images together. It's never a chore and always a pleasure. I hope you are still continuing to enjoy seeing the mosaics here each week? I ask because I would like to know more about what you want to see featured on this blog. It's easy enough for me to continue on with my usual little habits, but if there is something different you might like to suggest, do please drop me an email. I know that blog reading is in decline, or is it? my readership numbers are still very good and thank you always for visiting. I often ponder how best to engage with people who are interested in my work and creative world..... your thoughts would be welcome...

It's a damp and cool start here, that kind of day when it could be just about April, or October, or September, or May, or August.... yep it's still August....  I am trying to come to terms with the fact that we have had an indifferent summer.  But I would rather that did not get me down too much. My flower garden in pots by the kitchen door is thriving - and I have enjoyed spending some time with my two teenaged children. We like to go for walks in our nearby woodland and park..... I do enjoy autumn and look forward to the special golden light that will most definitely come over the next few months....

Something else to look forward to: I shall be having a special giveaway on this blog this week. So please do pop back soon, (look out for my tweets) as it will all be over in a flash of summer lightning......

Meanwhile, a late summer sale continues on in my shop. These are the final reductions. The sale continues only until and including next Monday. Then it will be all change! I am adding a completely new selection of work to my shop on September 2nd - starting afresh with new embroidery and paintings and more..... I'll be updating my shop little and often all through autumn and into winter.... More details to follow.

more soon x

embroidery for Autumn

'Autumn portrait' - a miniature embroidery artwork

A piece I completed recently..... just to give you a little idea of things to come. New embroidery will be in my shop from September onwards with new pieces added regularly.

*

In other news it is feeling rather autumnal today and has started raining this afternoon. I thought working on autumn-into-winter ideas this summer would mean I might be having to take regular breaks for ice lollies and cooling down etc... Not rushing into the garden to gather in the laundry.... if I have in anyway jinxed the weather (in England - I take no responsibility for elsewhere) I do apologise......

More previews and work in progress will be posted over the days and weeks ahead. If you are coming over here from Facebook please consider following my blog to see more.

a very close up view of miniature embroidery - in progress.... this is just one area of an intricate piece featuring two main figures and many other tiny faces....

As you may see in days and week to come by focus is very much  detail in stitch, small-scale.

Looking forward to sharing more of this piece as I work....

A Happy Monday to you - many thanks to all the artists, makers and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. Always a pleasure to look through the myriad of images over at Flickr. Please follow links to discover more....

I am posting this early in the morning as I have a busy start to my week. Also good news: there is a LATE SUMMER SALE now on in my shop. This is for two week only, until (and including) Monday 31st August. Special prices on everything in my shop. This is your last chance to purchase from the current selection - as come September it will be all new.

My next shop update will be Wednesday September 2nd. I am looking forward to sharing with you a new selection of embroidery, paintings and more. I've been rather tentative about showing new work here in recent weeks, as I did not want to be too soon on things...... But I will be previewing new work in the near future. What can I say: I'll be offering some traditional work such as figurative embroidery, some playful paintings - and new things too.

A busy week for me - with various work and personal plans ahead. I hope to post at least once or twice more this week with previews of new artworks. Thanks always.

Improvisations - stitch

Improvisations is a fairly new and ongoing project for me - this combines both my writing and visual work. Using my sewing machine as a handwriting tool, I 'hand write' an improvised text, finding words and phrases as I stitch along. I may have a starting phrase in mind but apart from that look at no other notes. A certain mood, or overlapping of ideas may take place. I write in fragmented phrases, with the approach of a poet but not expecting anything like a polished poem. The images I find to write about are things I think and write about quite a lot: nature, history, painting....

The process of stitching is a deeply intense one - I am using both my 'writing' mind and my skill as a machine embroidery stitch maker. But I do enjoy the challenge.

improvisation 1

improvisation

The resulting pieces are like single pages 'torn' from a notebook but with the added qualities that using thread allows. I keep ends of threads loose and flowing, tangling together, just as my thoughts, ideas on words, the sound of phrases may emerge and come together.....

I aim to emulate my own handwriting, words linking together in their sudden flow and need for presence. With all the tangle and cryptic intrigue, I like the 'reverse' side of the work perhaps as much or more than the 'right'.

These pieces are part of an ongoing project and at this stage I am not concerning myself with 'the end' or what will happen to them. Possibly some kind of book project may come about, at least a few postcard prints of photographs. I shall continue you on and see how this evolves.

I am also working on my more traditional folk and story inspired embroidery pieces. I'll show more of these in the near future.

a sneak peek at new embroidery

a quick snapshot of a series I have been working on - I am revisiting an earlier embroidery series, creating 'snowglobe' miniature portraits in stitch. These small, intricate and detailed works have an autumn into winter look. I am making a selection for my September shop update and so here is just a little sneak-peek. Next week I hope to show you a little more of the work I have been designing and making recently....

Hello, a happy August Monday to you! It's been a strange start to the month here, with mist and cloudiness giving an almost autumnal feel. We still need some rain and it seems like we are lingering in a strange not-quite-summer mode. Oh well. I have been busy working on things for autumn and winter, so...... Many thanks always to the artists and photographers featured in this mosaic. As always I encourage you to follow links and see more.

As mentioned above, I've been busy designing and creating, sketching out ideas, exploring colours - all work that will contribute to my autumn-into-winter artworks. I am looking forward to sharing more with you here.

Look out of for a post later this week - I'll be giving a very sneaky peek at my new embroidery projects!

Take care and enjoy your week.
