Hello and a happy bank holiday Monday to you - it is a chilly one here, but we have had a fine weekend. Thanks always to the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. If you have time please click on a few links and discover more....

I've been painting this morning and am planning to be working on various new things over the next week. I'm not updating my shop this week, so my next update is planned for Wednesday 8th.

At the moment I am enjoying working in a variety of media, and am exploring the possibilities of a new art zine. I think I may have something coming together but it's too early to say much more. I will of course share new work with you some time this week.

Have a good start to your week and more soon.

new work

a look at just a few new artworks.....

stacked cups on olive wood

'stacked cups on olive wood' - acrylics and gouache on linen

a textured, matt feel to this work.... This is one of several smaller still life works that I have created recently. This work measures 15cm x 12.5cm so quite modest in size. I offer my work unframed so that you can decide just how you might like it framed and displayed. This work would suit being part of a wall group or hung singly, perhaps in simple wood frame. (If you ever need advice about framing work I am happy to help, just send me a message via my shop)

continuing on with my figures in gardens....

woman in black and white

woman in black and white - gouache on Fabriano paper

There are several more works - and you are welcome to take a look at my updated shop tomorrow - the update will be available to see from 2pm (UK time).

Thanks always.

Hello Monday again, and thanks always to my Flickr contacts  - I hope you enjoy exploring this week's mosaic.... It's a mild and sunny start to the week here. With recent rain and sun things are really greening up and thriving. Flowers I planted last summer are coming back to bloom, which is great to see and some have seeded about making plants for free. I pop into our little garden every so often but spend too much time staring and not actually doing. Perhaps not such a bad thing.....

You may have seen my post yesterday showing recent smaller still life paintings. I've been painting today also. These works are created using layers of paint and involve me adding and subtracting, making textures, before I have an idea what it's all about. Quite time consuming but I am feeling my way toward having quite a lively collection for my shop update on Wednesday.

So this week I'll be updating my shop on Wednesday, usual time 2pm (UK). I hope to be adding a selection of still life works, a further small selection of figure paintings on paper also and perhaps one or two other things. Please note that there will be no shop update next week. So my next update after this week will most likely be June 8th. Thanks always for your interest and support.

I hope to share photos of new work tomorrow. Have a good start to your week.

smaller still lifes

a group of smaller still life paintings

A group of smaller still life paintings - part of an ongoing series.... these are all quite small, (as I tend to work on a smaller scale when painting with acrylics/gouache). I like the matt feel that combining acrylics and gouache lends to the work. My use of colour has come about through discovering five or so current favourite colours including olive green and payne's grey. Working in my sketchbooks has helped me find these colours. I am moving away from using white, black and so on and finding hues that come from looking at painting of the past.

Just thought I would share this with you to give an idea of what I have been busy with over the past few days or so.

new work

blue figures or an evening walk

'blue figures or an evening walk' - gouache on Fabriano paper.... many if not all of my detailed gouache works are set outdoors this week....

folk figure with dots motif

'folk figure with dots motif' - gouache on Fabriano paper.... this is one of a series of larger black/monochrome figure studies.... (you will see others in my shop tomorrow

golden sleeves - a figure portrait

'golden sleeves' a figure study

I have quite a fine selection of new gouache works to add to my shop tomorrow. It has not been planned out this way but it seems I have been rather focused on gouache painting in recent times (though I have been using acrylics in my sketchbooks). This focus has allowed me to explore colour and just how versatile gouache may be, so it's a good thing. And I hope that you may enjoy seeing the full selection tomorrow, usual time, 2pm (UK).

Many thanks always

Hello and a sunny Monday to you - it is a rather beautiful May day here and I hope you are also enjoying a fine start to the week. Thanks as always to my Flickr contacts featured in the mosaic. Do follow links etc....

This weekend I spent some time painting and working on new works on paper. Tomorrow I'll share with you some of this new work including a look at a new series of 'folk figures'. I've been painting today and tomorrow I expect to be revving up the sewing machine. Most of the time I plan my week out quite carefully, juggling work and family life as I do. However, if inspiration comes along in something I will shift my plans. I do like to keep myself on my toes, always challenging myself to make the very best I can.

So this morning I decided to wind up our vintage mantle clock and it's just chimed the quarter hour - and I just about jumped out of my skin, again. But I do like to hear the ticking and chiming. It's not something we have going all the time though, I let the clock wind down and forget about it for a while. Such is the pattern of things.... I like to think that hearing an old clock links me to the timeless past....

Have a good Monday and more tomorrow.... Updating my shop this week on Wednesday (2pm uk time).

new work

It's that time of the week when I enjoy sharing with just a few new artworks....

'Butterfly' - gouache on Fabriano paper

woman in black

a picture book portrait

'picture book portrait'  - gouache on Fabriano paper

'songbird in blue' - embroidery portrait brooch

A variety of work created over the past few weeks.... I'm currently focusing on gouache on paper and enjoying these, especially working with rich tones. I also have enjoyed my recent stitch work and particularly how the tiny figures are becoming ever more present in their intricate worlds.....

These are just a few of the selection of works I shall be adding to my shop tomorrow. If you follow me over at Instagram you may get to see a few others.

Updating tomorrow at 2pm (UK time) - thanks always

Hello to another May Monday - and a new mosaic of lovely, intriguing and ecelectic images..... please follow  links to discover more and thanks always to the artists and photographers featured. It has been a warm, summery time here in England! We seem to have skipped right into summer with only a glimmer of spring on the way..... (but you never know how things may be).

I hope you are having a good start to May - one of my favourite months because yes the weather gets so much warmer (or usually does) and the days are longer and brighter. Yesterday I went for a walk in our local parkland and woodland. It was a pleasure to sit and wonder.....

May stream in the woods

So now on to this week.... I am updating my shop on Wednesday at the usual time of 2pm (UK). There will be a selection of new embroidery and artworks on paper. I'm looking forward to sharing these with you and hope to put together a 'new work' blog post tomorrow.

Thanks always for reading here and have a good start to your week.

sketchbooks

a look at recent sketchbooks - -

My sketchbooks are not only about working out ideas, considering colour, texture and so on - they are the artworks I get to keep for myself. As a working artist I sell as much of my work as I can, but my sketchbooks are those things I allow myself to hoard. Many ideas in my sketchbooks never evolve further but they are more than play spaces. There will be times when I will layer and work and work at pages until I am happy with them. Often my pages become or are abstract in appearance and it really is about process, colour and layers - I enjoy working in an abstract way but I understand I am perhaps best known for my more figure-orientated work, so my sketchbooks allow me to explore my abstract ideas freely.

I am continuing to post photos of sketchbooks over at my tumblr account: http://paintinthemargins.tumblr.com/  - you are welcome to look and follow me there if you so wish....

Hello and a happy May to you..... yes it really is. And a bumper mosaic Monday for you this week. Thanks always to Flickr contacts and please do take a look at links to discover more..... It's a bank holiday Monday here in the UK so the weather is cloudy with another layer of cloud for good measure. I have spent this weekend working and doing other things, mixing it as always.

This week I am completing and considering artworks - including a selection that will be going to Atelier 51 in Brighton. I am an invited guest artist there during their 'open studio' weekends in May.
