Hello again - last Monday in August (bank holiday in parts of the UK.) warm, cloudy start to our week here. I hope you enjoy this rather eclectic mosaic - there were so many really good images to choose from over at Flickr this week. These are some of the best, so please follow links and discover more about the featured artists/photographers....

This week is one of those 'handing over' periods - when summer starts to wane and September steps in.... and people may be returning to school/work, thinking of autumn and so on.... Here there are a few signs of autumn to come: I saw large green acorns in our local woodland the other day. I hope we shall enjoy yet more sunny weather. I quite like September, when the air has a slight nip to it especially in the mornings, and on a sunny evening the light casts a golden halo across the land....

So this week, I am working quietly at new artworks, paintings and drawings. I'll hope to share more new work with you soon. I spent this morning painting, enjoying the challenge of ideas as they evolve.

My next shop update is Wednesday 7th September at the usual time of 2pm. I shall be updating most Wednesdays onward, though I may vary the time - just now and then.

Have a very good start to your week and more soon.

recent sketchbooks

A look at recent sketchbook pages - you may see how I consider colour, shape, and just how to abstract a figure so that they are appear 'figuratively'.... If you like seeing inside my sketchbooks then please consider following me over at my tumblr page - which is the main space I use to record my sketchbooks virtually, keep an archive of photos, helping me to look back at a glance. I can often fill a small book quite quickly and then the book gets stored away. I do like to look back at the real thing, there's nothing quite like it for seeing the layers and colours in the flesh, but photographing sketchbooks and having somewhere to look at them helps me. Also photographing sketchbook pages can help me identify problems I might encounter with photos - for example photographing colours that are not always easy to get exactly right.

Photographing artwork is of course an artwork in itself and a topic I may write about again in the future.

So, yes if you would like to see more visit my tumblr here.http://paintinthemargins.tumblr.com/

I also, from time to time, get postcards of sketchbook pages professionally printed - I include a postcard with purchases when sending out artwork. So you may have already received one of these postcards, or might get one in the future.

Hello, another Monday - and a new mosaic for you to explore. Please follow links, if you have the time, and thanks always to my Flickr contacts. I'm writing this earlier than I usually do, as I have a busy day ahead. It's a white cloudy start to the day here but we are due to get another hit of warmer sun... It's been yet another mixed summer, weather-wise, but then that is quite expected!

Many thanks to everyone who visited my shop last week, following the 'big August' update - and thanks indeed to you if you were able to purchase/reserve artwork. I am very grateful to you, as this is how I make my 'living' and every sale of an artwork matters to me very much. It means a great deal to be sending my work near and far, I cannot say that enough. So much appreciated.

This week I am happy to be spending time with family but also working on new projects. I'm thinking ahead to autumn-inspired projects and all the things I want to explore in the months ahead. There will be some new 3-D paper sculpture works, more painting and drawing.... Plenty for me to consider, plan and create. I hope to share some of the process and write notes here.

I will be posting something here later in the week - a few glimpses of new work/ sketchbooks.

Have a good start to your week.

Showing here just two of the selection of paintings I have ready to add to my shop tomorrow afternoon. These works are both acrylics on paper (my preferred Fabriano paper 300gsm). Working on paper allows me to add quite subtle layers, playing with texture and tone. My work is very much about exploring shape and working with three, four colours only, discovering new ideas as I work. Much of how I work is about improvising, going with what I am seeing rather than being too rigid. I'd rather not battle with the painting but instead allow the painting to lead me. This takes some confidence, or bravado, and I'm always learning....

Shop update tomorrow, 2pm UK time. Hope you may enjoy seeing all the new works.

Hello, another August Monday - here we are in the middle of August and I'm looking out of the window at a deep blue sky. It's a breezy, sunny start to the week here, and we have been enjoying something like summer here in the south of England.... thanks always to the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic.

A busy start to the week here - I've been sorting through all the work I've made in the past few weeks, considering what may be added to my shop on Wednesday. So yes, this Wednesday will be my August update - just one update this month, with a special selection of new artworks. I'll be updating at the usual time of 2pm. I do hope you may enjoy seeing all the variety of work - and as always I am happy to answer questions, and reserve works (one at a time, for up to two weeks).

My next update will be in early September. I'll be updating most weeks from September onward, adding a little and often, through to - (dare I say it) the end of the year......... but between now and then there is so much to look forward to. Exciting times for me, as I have been discussing artwork and layout etc.. with the US publisher of my book, due out in October. Much more on that in the weeks ahead.

Tomorrow I'll share here a few new artworks and write a little about them. I'm very happy with this newest collection of paintings and have been enjoying working in my sketchbooks and seeing ideas evolve.

More soon....

new work - smaller paintings

figure in interior (muted pink)

'figure in interior (muted pink)' - acrylics on Fabriano paper

Showing you here just a few of the new smaller paintings I have been working on recently.... As you may know working on a smaller scale appeals to me greatly. The challenge to suggest detail and perhaps narrative, within a small space, is one I enjoy. I also tend toward a quiet palette, muted tones inspired by historical painting, rather than brasher primaries - though I'll always throw something different into the mix, now and then. Recently I have considered greys and white, and flesh tones. When working with acrylics particularly I keep my paint colour choices limited: simply never having too many different colours to hand. Tending not to work with pure black or bright white, at least at the start of a work, I enjoy instead Payne's grey and parchment.

Smaller works ask the viewer to step nearer. Yet I like to imagine my paintings on a wall may offer good company from a distance, an interesting glance into a world. Rather than being awed by great swathes of colour, a viewer is not held back but is hopefully intrigued to consider what is and is not being said....

Hello again, it's a sunny start to the week here - sunny with a brisk breeze. I hope you may have time to explore this mosaic and thanks always to my Flickr contacts.

This morning I worked on a new painting - enjoying the textures of acrylics on paper. I'm working on a variety of new work at the moment and will share more with you soon.

So this week I'm continuing on, making new work - and taking a few hours off to catch up with personal projects. It does seem that many people are on their holidays at the moment, and good for them. I'm not going away, but am enjoying some time with my family and for that I will always feel most fortunate.

My next shop update is next week - time will slip by - so yes, next week on Wednesday at the usual time of 2pm. This will be my one and only August update and so of course quite special....

thanks always and more soon

pictures in a gallery - new work

An ongoing fascination for me is the experience of visiting art galleries: experiencing art 'in the flesh', discovering and revisiting favourite paintings, the process of viewing, people-watching in galleries, seeing pictures within pictures, making links between art from different times and places.... all these things feed into my work and will continue....

Here are a few paintings made recently. These are all acrylics on Fabriano paper. I work in expressive layers, finding, rediscovering and editing, improvising. I am working in a quite limited range of colours. It has been helpful for me to look back on old sketchbooks featuring abstracted figures in acrylics. These books date back over the past few years and continue to be a good resource for me. I am convinced that sketchbooks are my most valuable resource when considering new work. Although I do a great deal of looking, research and reading. Sketchbooks are what you make of them, of course. So I continue to invest time and consideration into pages, and experiment freely, and work at the pages, keeping ideas fresh as well as vigorous.

Hello and a happy 1st of August - it really doesn't feel like August here today, oh dear, it's a bit chilly and overcast - but then how does August feel like in England?? (answers on a postcard please). Thanks as always to my Flickr contacts for these delightful images, coming together to make a mosaic to inspire your week ahead...

I've started my week by painting - just started with some new work in acrylics. It's intriguing to use acrylics again after being so engrossed in my recent gouache works. Acrylics just felt like the paint to turn to for the ideas I have in mind - using brushstrokes, whites and greys. I'm still continuing on with gouache too. As you may know I sometimes mix the two - the possibilities are, as always, endless.....

Hope to share some new work with you in a few days time. My next shop update is in a few weeks time, on Wed 17th. A big thank you to everyone who purchased from my last week, I am very grateful to you.

Have a very good week ahead and more soon
